The City of Norfolk's Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic IÂ to join our athletics, playground, and field maintenance landscaping crews. Â This position will work with our Parks and Forestry Operations to perform maintenance to buildings and grounds, perform repairs and preventative maintenance to equipment and provide support for special events and exhibits.Â

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

One year of experience as a building helper or apprentice.
Successful candidate will be required to obtain a Virginia Pesticide License within 6 months of employment and have a valid driver's license.Work Location:Â 2839 Dana Street, Norfolk, VA 23509
Work Hours:Â Â Monday - Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm
Signing Bonus: This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus for applications received on or after February 22, 2022. The signing bonus will be paid in two (2) increments: $2,500 upon completion of 60 days of employment, and $2,500 upon completion of your probationary period. To receive the signing bonus, you must be an active employee in good standing.   Â

Essential Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

- Performs maintenance to grounds by repairing and maintaining athletic fields, painting and marking athletic fields, removing and installing football, soccer, and field hockey goals; renovating, refinishing, repairing and painting playground equipment and hard-court surfaces, installation of playground mulch and sand, maintain dugouts and bleachers, performing minor concrete repairs/installations and some carpentry skills.
- Provides support for special events and exhibits by running power to exhibits and lighting, building small sheds, shipping containers, ramps and signs, setting up and dismantling tents, posters, signs, chairs, lights, tables, platforms, stages, games, bleachers and fencing, cleaning, fabricating and setting up parade floats, setting up and dismantling transporting barricades, hanging banners, blocking off parking lots, setting up power, sound systems and podiums, painting, plastering and constructing temporary walls and office spaces, repairing and replacing ceiling tiles, broken bricks, and floor tiles, installing door locks, unloading and transporting displays, repairing bleachers and benches and assisting the welding and carpenter shop.
- Inspects, repairs, maintains, and installs playground equipment.
- Performs maintenance support for emergency response team which responds for removal of ice, snow and storm debris.
