This position assists with the daily operations of the library. Acts as an assistant to the supervisor. Provides customer service to patrons by developing and delivering age appropriate programs and readers' advisory. Promotes the general use of facilities and assists patrons in the use of collection and computers. This position is a support position at Library Headquarters. This individual trains branch youth personnel, builds and maintains KidZones and Playscapes and other youth spaces at PL locations and develops systemwide program plans for seasonal and yearly programs.The Norfolk Public Library offers equal opportunity access to information, high quality book and multimedia materials, programs, exhibits, online resources, and technology to meet the needs of our diverse community for life-long learning, cultural enrichment, and intellectual stimulation.Departmental Hiring Salary Range : $41,503Essential FunctionsEssential functions include but are not limited to : Assists Youth Services Coordinator with youth program planning and implementationAssists Digital Media Coordinator with graphic design tasks, maintaining social media pages and other tasksAssists Adult Programs Coordinator with adult program planning and implementationConducts Early Literacy programsConnects with schools to schedule library promotional visitsAttends outreach events, representing NPL to the community & schoolsDevelops fliers and other promotional materialsConducts training modules on child development and best practicesSupervises volunteers, interns and NEL'sInventories Storytime kits, KinderSTEM kits, YOUmedia rigsAssist with coordinating Special EventsResearch grants. Writes grant applicationsPlans & promotes Summer Reading ProgramManage database for Summer Reading ProgramAbility to coordinate storytime kits for a multi-branch systemCreates PowerPoints presentationsResearch topics for reports and other projectsEdits reports and writes award applicationsPerforms administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reportsAbility to prioritize tasksProficient in Microsoft Office products such as WORD, EXCEL, PowerPointAbility to communicate effectively verbally and in writingPromotes the concept of the Family Place Library in NorfolkAttends Family Place Training in New YorkEducation / ExperienceWork requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.One year of experience in library or related services. Experience working with children & teens and adults in a library. Supervisory experience preferred.Additional Information & Requirements Valid Driver's licenseWork Hours : 40 hours / week. 9 : 00 am - 5 : 30 pm. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
