The Department of City Planning ensures the highest quality of life for present and future generations by providing excellent planning and enforcement services emphasizing the development of safe, healthy and fun communities where people choose to live, work and play.
Reviews and approves construction plans and specifications for residential, commercial, industrial and institutional structures to ensure compliance with codes. Oversees permit application and construction package and manages personnel.
- Performs commercial plan reviews in conformance with the Virginia Construction code.
- Conducts plan review for site plans, fire suppression plans, and building plans. Attends meetings, responds to applicants, checks calculations, and verifies specifications to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Oversees permit application processing and construction package submittals by calculating permit fees and charges. Ensures fees are applied and monitors the routing through the appropriate agencies.
- Acts as a project manager by conducting meetings with City departments, architects, engineers and contractors to provide building code information, and coordinates plan review efforts.
- Two years of experience in building construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Associate degree in building construction, structural engineering, or a closely related area and two years of experience in building construction; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Virginia Commercial Building Plans Examiner within 18 months of employment
