General Services Facilities Maintenance Division is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 250 city government facilities including: City Hall, Public Safety Building (Jail), Norfolk Consolidated Courts Complex, entertainment venues such as the Scope Arena, Chrysler Hall, Attucks Theater, the Virginia Zoo; a cruise terminal, all police and fire stations, recreation centers; pools and numerous city office buildings. The Division is staffed with 98 employees responsible for carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC, carpentry, elevators, roofing, moves and relocations of city employees, finance, and administrative functions.

The Pool Technician will test pool water and adjust chemicals as needed, maintain pumps and filters, and ensure pools are clean and safe for citizens’ use.Essential functions for the Pool Technician include, but are not limited to:
- Monitors and maintains overall operation of interior and exterior swimming pools
- Takes water samples to check water chemistry
- Adjusts chlorine, CO2, and other chemicals as needed
- Obtains estimates for materials and/or services and submits for purchase order by following procurement procedure
- Replaces circular pumps and motors
- Checks operations of boilers, hot water heaters, and air conditioning units for indoor pools
- Ensures operations of chemical feed pumps and filtration systems are working properly Removes non-operational parts and pumps and takes to vendor for repair
- Keeps pump/filter areas clear of debris
- Cleans areas around and inside pools
- Repairs equipment as needed
- Reports building issues affecting pool operation to supervisor
- Preps and closes outdoor pools for winter months and reopens in summer
- Educates personnel in pool equipment operation
- Schedules, coordinates, and oversees work on pools and equipment while serving as liaison between division managers and contractors
- Maintains exterior decorative fountains and splashpads
- Follows Facility Maintenance's Purchasing Resource Guide to procure materials and services for assigned work orders
- Uses work order management application (Facility Dude) to update assigned work orders with notes, labor hours, and materials used
Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
Required:
- One year of experience in maintenance, repair, and operation of HVAC or Decorative Fountains and Commercial Pools.
- Experience checking pool water chemical levels and adjusting as needed.
- Valid Driver's License Required. A DMV transcript dated within 30 days will be required if selected for hire.
- Monday - Friday, 7:00AM - 3:30PM
- Occasional overtime
- This position is designated as Essential and will be required to report to work during City closures due to inclement weather and other emergencies.
