General Responsibilities Summary
Primarily responsible for computer systems and servers, including all software and hardware installation, upkeep, data recover, backup, setup on user accounts, maintenance and security; administers, integrates, monitors and tunes assigned enterprise server platforms and operating systems for optimal performance; installs, configures and maintains software, hardware and multi-platform communications software and protocols; manages backup and data recovery on such systems; configures user accounts and maintenance of basic security; participates with the systems administration team to ensure the integration of network, platform and application structures.

Performs systems administration functions for enterprise-level servers and mid-range platforms; installs, configures and maintains assigned servers and operating system software in both physical and virtual environments, hardware, peripheral devices, SAN disk subsystems and arrays; installs, configures, tests and implements system monitoring and management software tools; monitors resource utilization, system alerts, events, changes and activities that may impact performance or security; researches, troubleshoots and resolves complex and ambiguous system errors, failures and other problems that may involve a combination of hardware, operating system, internally developed and vendor application software and database structure configuration, resource conflict and / or interoperating problems; analyzes and installs operating system patches, releases, upgrades and fixes in test and production environments; troubleshoots, researches, diagnoses and resolves hardware, software and network connectivity problems; makes adjustments, installs fixes and performs tuning to resolve problems and achieve optimal performance.
Performs hypervisor platforms and systems infrastructure administration; installs, configures and manages VM hosts and servers; utilizes tools and utilities to migrate physical servers to virtual boxes; moves virtual servers to different hosts to troubleshoot and resolve problems and complete software upgrades; allocates storage capacity for VM servers, monitoring storage utilization and making adjustments to increase storage allocations as required; assesses error conditions and takes appropriate action, including replacement of failed disk drives.
Monitors server intrusion detection systems; conducts vulnerability assessments and prioritizes and remediates vulnerabilities identified; works with the systems administration team to develop, recommend, implement, and enforce security policies and remote access standards and guidelines to meet City, legal and regulatory requirements.
Participates in the planning, upgrade, repair, and maintenance of data center facilities, power and fire protection systems; door access hardware and software, creates and manages protocols for shut down and start up procedures; participates in evaluating and recommending hardware and software.
Performs systems administration tasks for email, eFax and messaging environments; adds and removes user accounts; researches, troubleshoots and resolves complex systems and user issues; works with external entities to research and resolve authentication and routing issues; interacts with users to determine needs and recommend solutions to email, messaging and other needs.
Performs backup and recovery of enterprise data using specialized software tools and server configurations; performs hardware and software administration for the enterprise backup platforms and systems infrastructure; reviews automated messages on a daily basis to ensure backup processes are completed successfully; researches and resolves error messages, disk failures and other problems; performs regular enterprise data backup coverage review and makes adjustments as required.
Manages the deployment of desktop applications locally, through enterprise configuration and management services platforms and systems infrastructure, taking into account issues that will be encountered as a result of multiple software versions, multiple platforms with differing software installers, impacts on security protocols, impacts on inter-operations with other applications and other critical issues in a highly complex software / infrastructure environment.
Provides technical assistance to applications development staff in providing system infrastructure information and determining access, setup, data location, and other requirements; provides technical assistance during the installation and testing of software; responds to problems and requests for assistance regarding customer access and use of applications and associated data.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate's degree in Computer Sciences or related field from an accredited university or three years of system administration experience; or equivalent combination of education or experience that provide necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of this job. A Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification or any other industry-qualified certification that relates to Microsoft Systems administration is preferred.
A Class D driver's license and good driving record are required and must be maintained throughout employment.
