Under general supervision, performs routine and complex analysis of water samples using microbiological and chemical processes and methods as required, and maintains records of analysis.   Performs related operational tasks such as performing routine sample collection from distribution system, production wells, customer locations, special projects, new installations and recently repaired location sites. Ensures all compliance sampling, analysis and record keeping is performed in a timely manner and within established guidelines of the quality systems. Calibrates, maintains, troubleshoots and knows to use various laboratory equipment.

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and reports to Water Quality Control Manager.

  • Collects samples, performs field analysis and basic testing as well as bacteriological and chemical analysis of water samples from distribution system, production wells, customer locations, special projects, new installations and recently repaired location sites as needed following the Standard Operational Procedures (SOP’S).
  • Notifies laboratory manager of any non-conformance and assist with the corrective action.  
  • Enters the results into a data system used for reporting purposes, information which is retained for a minimum of five years.
  • Performs daily, monthly and quarterly calibration, maintains and troubleshoots various meters and instruments in the laboratory and support equipment for plant operations. 
  • Prepares sample collection documentation and “chain of custody” forms for the collection of samples. 
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and maintains records following the procedures for control of records established by the laboratory. 
  • Sets up and calibrates new instruments in the laboratory and assists with the calibration of some support equipment for plant operations.
  • Assist with performing experimental testing of new methods and equipment.
  • Documents and prepares chemicals and media to use in the testing and analysis process and performs quality control on the chemicals.  
  • Maintains daily logs and documents of assigned work.
  • Assist with the chemical inventory and handles chemical disposal,
  • Receives and handles customer complaints regarding water quality testing, performs testing as needed and provides results to the customer once analysis is completed. 
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Associates Degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, Environmental Science, Biology or other related scientific discipline and minimum of two years of laboratory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Bachelor of Science Degree preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license with satisfactory driving record held throughout employment.
  • Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, supervisors, division and department heads, public/private sector contacts, and City contractors.
  • Knowledgeable in sample collection of drinking water, groundwater and environmental water samples and preservation techniques. 
  • Must have experience in environmental, drinking water or wastewater laboratory. 
  • Knowledgeable in laboratory accreditation (TNI) Standard as it pertains to environmental laboratory systems.
  • Must have knowledge in sample preservation techniques and be familiar with Florida Department of Environmental Protection Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Must have knowledge of QA/QC controls protocols and performs routine quality control procedures. 
  • Ability to organize work, establish priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
  • Proficiency working with computers and various types of software, including Microsoft products.
  • Ability to distinguish and identify different colors.
  • Other knowledge, skills, abilities, and credentials required for a specific position.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques and procedures, NELAC Standards and safety protocols.
  • Knowledge of FDEP methods for collection of water and wastewater samples. Ability to prepare reagents, solutions and culture media. 
  • Knowledge of mathematics through Algebra.
  • Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and directives proficiently.
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory analyses within specific protocols.
  • Ability to keep complete, accurate records and compile data.
  • Ability to be well organized, attentive to detail, and able to multi-task.
  • Ability to be flexible in order to work with and provide support for a number of people.
  • Ability to use small office equipment, computers, and highly technical computer applications.
