What are the responsibilities and job description for the Meter Reader I position at City of North Miami?
This is routine work in reading and recording readings of water meters. Employees in this class are responsible for accurately recording water meter readings, maintaining good working relationships with customers, and maintaining their equipment and vehicles in good operating order. Tasks are performed without close field supervision. All work is subject to inspection while in progress and upon completion.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
The main responsibility of an employee in this class is the accurate reading and recording of the water consumption of utility customers. Work includes keeping records on standard forms and entering data into an electronic hand-held device so that billings can be made properly. Ordinarily, employees follow designated routes, receive specific work instructions, and refer unusual questions to a technical supervisor for decisions.
Reads water meters, and enters readings on an electronic hand-held meter reading device;
Performs general clerical duties;
May be required to notify customers of certain situations related to meter readings;
Records proper entry on the electronic meter reading device to initiate corrective action for leaks and repairs which should be performed by maintenance personnel;
Cleans meter boxes and replaces or reports broken lids and covers;
Reports new services and tampering violations;
Obtains readings on floating meters;
Immediately report dangerous meter box conditions to the appropriate unit;
Check addresses, check meter numbers, and do routine, basic field checking with minimal customer contact;
Performs related work as required.
Must have a High school diploma or GED;
Must possess a valid Florida’s Driver License
Some knowledge of the geography and street locations of the City;
Ability to write legibly;
Ability to make simple arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public;
Physical ability to perform duties which entail walking all day under varying climatic conditions.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS:
Ability to learn the operation of meters and gauges used in recording water consumption;
Ability to learn the operation of an electronic hand-held meter reading device;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public;
Ability to perform field assignments with a minimum of supervision;
Ability to keep simple records and submit accurate reports of field inspections;
Physical strength and agility sufficient to walk 4-5 miles per day;
Physical strength and agility sufficient to lift and handle items weighing up to 30 pounds.
