GENERAL DESCRIPTION
This is an entry level water distribution operator position. Works under the direct supervision of the Distribution Systems Supervisor.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates and assists in the operation of all equipment assigned to the Field Operations Division of the Utilities Department in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
- Assists in the installation and repair of water mains and services, meters, water valves and fire hydrants.
- Performs manual labor as required such as digging holes and ditches, grounds keeping and maintenance for all water, and field operations facilities.
- Operates various hand and power tools as well as electric and gas-powered equipment used for the installation, repair and maintenance of water distribution systems and infrastructure.
- Performs general housekeeping duties as required, including but not limited to, operating, and maintaining vehicles, tools, and other operating equipment.
- Assists senior Field Operations personnel as required to include assisting in the maintenance of all water mains, hydrants and other system infrastructure.
- Performs a wide variety of customer service-related duties to include response to customer inquiries and wastewater issues, collaborate and coordinate with other departments as needed, and perform duties in the public eye while maintaining a highly professional public image and good customer relations.
- Assists with the meter retrofit program.
- Performs clerical work as needed to include but not limited to recording data, completing work orders, filing and records maintenance.
- Assist in establishing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures.
- Responds to on call requests before or after standard scheduled hours and to work weekends and nights as required.
- Follow directions and make decisions to complete tasks designated by his/her direct supervisor.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Performs daily vehicle checks. Cleans trucks and performs minor maintenance, as needed.
- Performs tagging out of compliance meter and backflow devices.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of safe operation and maintenance of tools and equipment required to perform assigned tasks.
- Skilled in verbal and written communication along with strong customer service skills.
- Skilled in the use of small office equipment, including copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.
- Skilled in using computers for data entry, word processing and accounting purposes.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor; drive trucks and operate other light and heavy equipment necessary to perform assigned duties.
- Ability to perform assigned work professionally, as neatly and quickly as possible to minimize inconvenience to the public.
- Ability to work in a team environment, follow direct instructions, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other agencies, departments, employees, and the public.
- Ability to be on call and to work weekends and nights as required.
- ·High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
