What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator II position at City of North Port?
Skilled in the operation of intermediate and complex construction equipment. Duties also include the performance of manual laboring tasks. Work is performed under direct supervision of a Field Supervisor or lead worker.
- Serves as primary operator of simple to moderately complex machinery and equipment, in all phases of road, street, sidewalk, drainage structures, swale construction and maintenance.
- Operates lawn mowers (40 horsepower and above), tractor-bush hogs, clam trucks, small dump trucks, and other equipment as assigned.
- Loads and off-loads materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Performs routine maintenance, adjustments, and minor repairs on equipment.
- Operates a variety of manual and power tools.
- Assists traffic control duties (road closing and detour) by setting up work zones.
- Maintains water control structures, including greasing and adjusting gates to control water valves, and maintaining surrounding grounds.
- Performs manual laboring, repair or construction tasks when not operating equipment.
- Keeps records and submits reports on work performed, as required.
- Knowledge of the operating principles and maintenance needs of intermediate and complex construction equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations, safety rules and occupational hazards, pertaining to the operation of assigned vehicles, equipment and machinery.
- Ability to use small office equipment, including copy machines or telephone systems.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to recognize malfunctions of said machinery and equipment.
- Ability to understand both written and oral instructions relating to the general duties and carry out said instructions with minimum supervision.
- Ability to read and understand written instructions, as well as prepare clear concise written reports.
- Ability to plan, organize and use mature judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions in accordance with established policy.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, other employees and the public.
- High School Diploma from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is preferred.
- Three (3) years of work experience in grounds maintenance, construction and heavy manual labor.
(A comparable amount of relevant training, education and/or experience may be substituted for the above qualifications.)
Licenses and Certifications:
Must possess a valid State of Florida Commercial Driver's License Class B by date of hire.
Emergency Response Responsibility
Every City employee has emergency response responsibilities, though not every position will require routine assignments during an emergency event. All employees are subject to recall around the clock for emergency response operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the normal work location, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official job description. Assignments in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature, with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically and operationally challenging conditions.
