What are the responsibilities and job description for the Grounds Maintenance Custodian position at City of Northampton, MA?
Definition:
Skilled manual work relating to the care and maintenance of school grounds, including recreation areas, athletic fields and playgrounds; all other related work as required.
Essential Duties:
- Performs grounds maintenance including caring for lawns, shrubs, plants, and trees; weeds and waters lawns, flowers, and plants; prunes trees and shrubs; sprays for control of insects; cuts grass, trims hedges, shrubs and bushes; rakes and packs leaves; removes snow in winter.
- Lays out and prepares athletic fields for use; rakes, fills in holes, lines out baselines, etc.; maintains grounds and fields, picking up litter, and maintains neatness of streets and sidewalks surrounding school buildings.
- Performs installation and routine maintenance, repair and painting of related equipment such as basketball hoops, swings, slides, monkey bars and see saws; maintains and performs minor repairs on related equipment.
- Performs other similar or related duties as required or as situation dictates.
Job Environment:
Work is generally performed outdoors, with frequent exposure to rain, snow, heat, cold weather conditions when maintaining exterior of school buildings and grounds; some exposure to hazards associated with chemicals and sprays; some exposure to fumes.
Use hand tools, power tools, lawn mower, snow blower, leaf vacuum/blower, infield marking machine, may operate light truck or automobile in traveling to and from school sites.
Makes occasional contact with school personnel and students.
Errors could result in significant and damage to grounds and equipment, personal injury, injury to co-workers, and create hazards to public safety.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill:
General knowledge of grounds maintenance and methods.
Ability to read and follow instructions on the labels of cleaning supplies. Ability to use hand tools for repairs and maintenance.
Ability to obtain a Massachusetts Class D Driver's license.
Ability to perform physically difficult work in all kinds of weather.
Physical Requirements:
Constant moderate physical effort required in performing duties. Frequently required to move (push or pull or lift) objects weighing between 20 and 60 pounds; frequent bending, kneeling and squatting when making repairs. Must be able to climb ladders and otherwise access all levels of school equipment. May spend entire shift walking or standing.
Education and Experience:
High School education or equivalent; two years’ experience in grounds maintenance, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
