What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bus Operator - Hourly/At-Will/Part-Time position at City of Norwalk (CA)?
A current Driving Record printout from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) must be submitted along with application. Applications submitted without a Driving Record printout will be considered incomplete and not given consideration.
Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Responsible for the safety of all passengers while boarding, riding, and departing from the bus.
Completes pre-trip safety inspection of exterior of Bus, noticing its general condition and looking for damage and leaks. Checking in the engine compartment for condition of belts, hoses, wiring and fluid levels. Checks condition of tires, tread, wheel walls, etc. Conducts an interior safety inspection, checking the drivers compartment for condition of controls such as steering wheel, accelerator and brake pedals, gauges, horn, wipers, lights, mirrors, etc. Conducts air brake system tests, wheelchair lift operation, emergency equipment conditions, seats, securements, etc. Completes the necessary inspection forms as required by law.
Drives bus over an assigned route in accordance with a time schedule, or may be assigned to Dial-A-Ride service for elderly and disabled. Operates the bus working odd hours, split shifts, holidays and weekends to conform with assigned schedules.
Collects and records fares and issues transfers; provides routine information to the public regarding bus routes and schedules.
Prepares reports of ridership, and accidents; prepares special reports as requested; turns in lost property found on or near City equipment or the Transit System office.
Operates two-way mobile bus radio in accordance with established operating rules and procedures.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
May assist in the training of other Bus Operators; may perform dispatcher duties on a relief basis.
Knowledge of: Federal and State laws as they relate to Commercial Drivers; state and local traffic laws and speed limits; provisions of the California Motor Vehicle code; safe driving practices, bus equipment, such as air brake system, and features of the bus. Emergency and accident handling procedures, fare policies, working with the public.
Ability to: prepare accurate reports and meet the public in situations requiring diplomacy and tact; work independently; follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Education and/or Experience
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. Example combinations include:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and twelve (12) months experience, within the last three years, in the safe operation of a bus; good driving record. Must be at least 21 years of age by filing deadline. Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates
Possession of or ability to obtain a Class A or B California driver's license at the time of appointment and a satisfactory driving record. Current or recently lapsed VTT Certification (DL260A) or School Bus Driver's Certificate or SPAB Certificate. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid medical examiner's certificate.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk. The employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit for extended periods of time. The employee is constantly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet while in the office, or moderately loud when in the field.
