The City of Norwalk is seeking energetic Recreation Leader I positions to fill vacancies for the Summer Season. The Recreation Leader, I assist in delivering recreation programs, participate in the organization and conduct of special events, and perform related duties as required. Positions in this class assist higher-level Recreation Leaders and serve as playground leaders, locker room attendants, or youth officials. This seasonal/hourly/at-will/part-time position averages approximately 20 hours per week. This position will work various hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Mandatory Training Dates: All selected applicants MUST be available to attend the following mandatory training dates before their first day of work:
May 9 (Friday) from 12pm - 8pm - Recreation Staff Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
May 10 (Saturday) from 8am - 5pm - Recreation Staff Training (All Recreation and Park Services staff must attend)
June 6-8 (Friday through Sunday) from 8am - 5pm - Aquatics Staff Training (Supplemental training for Lifeguards, Instructor Guards, Senior Guards, and Recreation Leaders I and II under Aquatics)
Organizes, conducts, and supervises adults' and children's free play and team activities in outdoor and indoor play areas.
Officiates and instructs in games; teach fundamentals of play and sports conduct in recreational activities; organizes and conducts non-athletic events and programs.
Instructs and supervises in arts and crafts and daycare programs; organizes club activities; keeps records and prepares written reports.
Supervises overall activities of the playground or other sites; observes and monitors participants' activities to ensure that park rules and regulations are followed; administers first aid as needed.
Maintains dressing room areas and checks in and out customer clothing; cleans pool areas and recreation facilities, including rooms, floors, and restrooms.
Ability to: supervise and monitor games and team activities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, participants, instructors, and the general public; follow oral instructions.
Education and/or Experience
Some experience participating in team or individual sports or serving as a leader or volunteer in organizations such as scouting, AYSO, Little League, or recreation departments.
Special Requirements
Must be at least 16 and in the eleventh grade or higher. The City of Norwalk requires a tuberculosis test. The candidate must be available to work from May 9, 2025, to August 5, 2025. Those candidates selected for employment will be required to attend mandatory training sessions held the week of May 9, 2025.
