Position Overview:
The Youth Diving Instructor is responsible for planning and leading structured small-group diving practices for athletes of varying skill levels as part of the Norwalk Recreation & Parks’ Learn-to-Swim/Dive program. This position emphasizes skill development, safety, and fostering a love for the sport in a supportive training environment. The coach will provide individualized feedback, ensure proper technique, and enforce program safety protocols while maintaining positive communication with athletes, parents, and program administrators.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and lead structured small-group diving practices that focus on skill progression, safety, and creating an enjoyable learning environment.
- Set clear development goals for each group, outlining specific progress and achievement targets to guide participants’ growth.
- Instruct athletes in proper diving techniques, including takeoffs, entries, body position, and overall execution.
- Offer individualized feedback and technical corrections tailored to the diverse skill levels of each diver.
- Foster a positive, safe, and supportive training environment while strictly enforcing all safety protocols and best practices.
- Oversee the setup, maintenance, and safe use of diving equipment before and after each practice.
- Maintain open and effective communication with athletes, parents, and program administrators, ensuring transparency and collaboration.
Supervision: Receives direction from the Aquatics Supervisor or their designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of:
- Knowledge of proper diving techniques, progressions, and safety protocols.
- First Aid principles and practices, including the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs).
- General aquatics safety rules and regulations.

Skills & Abilities:
- Strong swimming abilities, with the capacity to cover long distances.
- Experience working with youth athletes in a coaching or instructional role.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with the public.
- Ability to read, interpret, and follow safety protocols and written instructions
Minimum Qualifications
- Physical Requirements: Applicants must meet the health and physical condition standards required to perform the essential duties of the position, including the ability to swim long distances and remain alert under various conditions.
- 3 years of experience as a competitive diver and diving coach required.
Special Licenses/Certifications AND/OR Supplemental Information
- Certifications (Must be Current):
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid Certificate (or equivalent).
- American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (or equivalent).
- Additional certifications as required by local or state regulations.
