General Description
Under the supervision of The Chief Plant Operator – Water, the Apprentice Water Plant Operator performs a variety of operations and maintenance duties associated with producing and distributing water.
This is a training position to fully qualify an individual as a Water Treatment Operator I. Apprentice Water Plant Operator’s are limited to 24 months in the position to qualify for the position of Water Treatment Operator I. If unable to qualify, the Apprentice will be assigned to another appropriate position, if available; otherwise the Apprentice will be layed off with full lay-off benefits.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Assists Water Plant Operators in the operation of water treatment facilities, including operation of machinery and equipment.
- Collects samples, performs routine laboratory analyses and records results.
- Collects and records data pertinent to the operation.
- Flushes blow offs and ends of mains and operates air vents.
- Turns on and shuts off water mains, services, and fire lines.
- Flushes the water distribution system to ensure water quality.
- Performs water system valve maintenance.
- Performs minor maintenance of supply, treatment, and distribution equipment, facilities and grounds.
- Remains current with public safety codes and regulations as they apply to the services provided.
RELATED DUTIES:
- Participates on Department-wide work teams and committees chartered to evaluate or improve processes and promote the overall goals of the Department.
- Works with management and fellow employees to identify and correct health and safety concerns.
- Participates in setting group goals, assessing group accomplishments and providing feedback for continuous process improvement.
- Identifies and takes advantage of opportunities to introduce other NPU products and services to customers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Associates degree or equivalent credits in Science related field OR 5 years’ experience in water treatment or distribution may be substituted for the education requirement.
- Must possess a valid Driver’s License.
- Must obtain certification from the State of Connecticut Department of Health for the testing and inspection of Backflow Devices, within 24 months of appointment.
- Must obtain certification from the State of Connecticut Department of Health for the Surveying of Facilities for compliance with regards to backflow and cross connection, within 24 months.
Bi-lingual speaking skills a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Basic knowledge of tools, methods, materials and equipment associated with the treatment and distribution of quality drinking water in compliance with regulatory and industry standards.
- Working knowledge of the hazards associated with plant operations and the ability to comply with reasonable precautions.
- Demonstrated aptitude for learning and keeping up-to-date with rapidly changing technical information.
- Basic understanding of mechanics, electricity, and electronics.
- Ability to make accurate mathematical calculations.
- Able to gather information, prepare reports, and maintain inventory.
- Able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Able to follow safety rules and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to operate within established policies, practices and regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to interact positively, professionally and proactively with customers, external contacts and contractors.
- Able to instill confidence by resolving customer problems in a prompt, courteous and timely manner. Able to use interpersonal skills and technical knowledge to extract information from the customer and explain technical problems/solutions.
- Able to maintain and enhance NPU’s public image.
- Able to work under pressure and not get easily frustrated.
- Ability to perform in adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work regular and extended hours when required.
- Strong communication skills.
- Basic computer skills, including moving among screens, typing information, researching customer accounts online.
