Distinguishing Features of the Class: The work involves responsibility for cleaning buildings and general grounds keeping activities.  The incumbent performs a variety of cleaning tasks, some of which involve the operation of electrical equipment and the use of chemicals. The incumbent also performs snow removal activities. The incumbent locks and/or unlocks the building at the end or beginning of work. The work is performed according to established procedures and performed under the direction or specific instructions of a higher-level employee. Does related work as required.   

Typical Work Activities:

Performs a variety of building cleaning activities including ducting, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning windows, stripping, waxing and buffing floors;

Operates a variety of equipment relative to cleaning activities including dry and wet vacuums, carpet cleaners and floor strippers/buffers;

Empties waste baskets, collects and disposes of garbage and trash;

Sweeps, cleans and removes snow from sidewalks and other pedestrian common areas;

Performs minor maintenance tasks such as painting of the facility;

Cleans flower beds;

Performs non-mechanical building maintenance including changing light bulbs and filling soap and paper towel dispensers;

Performs grounds keeping tasks as required including raking, picking up liter, sweeping and snow removal;

Moves furniture, supplies and other equipment;

Lock and/or unlock the building as required;

Responds during emergencies if needed;

Cleans bathrooms and kitchen;

Full Performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:

Working knowledge of materials and equipment used in the cleaning of buildings including solvents and other chemicals. Ability to operate a variety of equipment relative to cleaning activities including dry and wet vacuums, carpet cleaners and floor strippers/buffers. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to work independently and/or with little supervision at times. Excellent interpersonal skills. Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Qualifications:  

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
