LATERAL TRANSFER TEST ANNOUNCEMENT
Salary Range : $55,779 - $79,485
2024 Rates - subject to change upon ratification of 2025 new pay scale)
The Norwood Civil Service Commission is accepting applications for the position of entry-level Firefighter and Lateral Firefighter / Paramedic. The selection process will involve a series of tests, beginning with a written examination on Wednesday, January 29th at 6 : 00 PM in the Norwood Community Center at 1810 Courtland Ave. Norwood, OH 45212. A valid Driver's license is required for identification for all tests.
ENTRY LEVEL QUALIFICATIONS :
Applicants must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, at the time of appointment. No person shall be eligible for an original appointment on or after their Forty-First (41st) birthday. Applicants must possess a valid driver's license.
LATERAL APPLICANT QUALIFICATIONS :
All Entry Level Applicant Qualifications; and
Minimum 3 years of consecutive full-time experience with a Municipal Fire Agency. Applicant must have held a full-time career position conducting uniformed Fire and EMS duties with the same municipal fire service for at least three years. Part-time service is not calculated for full-time service.
For those applicants not currently employed as a Firefighter / Paramedic, there shall be NO MORE THAN ONE (1) YEAR break in full-time service from previous employment as a career Firefighter / Paramedic.
Applicants can have had no disciplinary action brought against them in the last Twelve (12) months that resulted in suspension or loss of pay.
Applicants must possess a valid State of Ohio Firefighter II Certification and State of Ohio EMT- Paramedic Certification and be current with applicable continuing education of ACLS, CPR, along with other requirements from the State of Ohio.
Qualifying Lateral entry Firefighters may will be placed at the appropriate step level of the current collective bargaining agreement, dependent upon qualifications and years of service up to at the FIRE 3 W / EMT-PARAMEDIC LEVEL.
EMPLOYMENT PROCESS :
The employment process will begin once the applicant successfully passes the written examination. Other processes may include, but are not limited to, physical agility testing, panel interview(s), a background investigation, and a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA) or polygraph examination. Upon a conditional offer of employment, a medical assessment, drug screening, and a psychological assessment will be required.

Additional credit shall be given for the following :
- Military Credit (must be a resident of the State of Ohio at the time of the test) - 20%
- Bachelor's Degree - 10%
- Associate degree - 5% (if no Bachelor's Degree)
- State of Ohio Certified Firefighter II (240 hours) - 10%
- State of Ohio Certified Firefighter I (120 hours) - 5%
- State of Ohio Certified EMT-P (Paramedic) - 10%
- State of Ohio Certified EMT-B (Basic) - 5%
TOTAL MAXIMUM COMBINED CREDIT PERMITTED - 20%
Proof of discharge under honorable conditions (to receive Military credit), and proof of ALL other additional credit must be submitted WITH THE APPLICATION to receive credit.
Applicants MUST receive a minimum passing grade of seventy percent (70%) on the written test, PRIOR to receiving any additional credit(s)
