Job Summary:
A seasonal position as a park gardener offers you the opportunity to obtain technical, leadership, and operational skills. Working with individuals from numerous professional and social backgrounds, this team-oriented role provides horticultural support and maintenance of outdoor, city-owned green spaces. The mission is to provide safe, professionally maintained, and aesthetically attractive parks and public spaces. This position additionally enhances the quality of life and value of O’Fallon as a place to live and visit, while it is not a customer facing job, the public interactions are positive as they appreciate the beautification of their community.
While desirable, specific landscaping skills are not a requirement to be considered for this job. On-the-job training for all tasks is provided if the individual is willing to learn new skills, approaches them with a positive attitude and enjoys working outdoors daily. This is a seasonal position with a flexible work schedule from February through November. Additionally, the position offers the opportunities to work within other areas of the parks department. This may include but not limited to seasonal park maintenance and ballfield maintenance.

Essential Duties/ Responsibilities:
- Plant installations, pruning, deadheading, mulching, weeding, edging, tilling, raking, watering, digging, brush removal, invasive species removal, and other manual tasks.
- Manual labor includes lifting heavy materials, bending, stooping, standing/walking movement for extended periods of time, kneeling, pushing and so forth.
- Special protocols are implemented to lessen the need to work in adverse weather conditions, although at times working in the heat and the rain is needed.
- Operating equipment such as park vehicles with trailers, bed edger, sod cutter, weed trimmer and hand tools; other duties as assigned. Training is provided for all equipment use

Essential Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 17 years of age, Required.
- Valid Drivers’ License in good standing, Required.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Most work is accomplished in an outdoor environment, subject to weather fluctuations (wide range of temperatures and inclement conditions) – Required.
- Ability to walk, run, stand, and sit and complete a variety of motor skills;
- Ability to lift and carry 30-70 pounds regularly;
- Ability to hear and see well;
