Do you have a passion for something that other people would enjoy learning and doing?  We are looking for enthusiastic individuals that can lead and assist a variety of youth and adult recreational programs. This position, under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Manager and Recreation Coordinator, will plan, oversee and directly instruct recreational activities in a fun, safe and supportive environment for all ages. Our goal is to collaboratively develop and implement community recreational programming and events serving all ages.  Join us in the development of new enrichment classes, sports clinics, recreational sports leagues, and summer camps and enjoy the impact you can have on your community!We are looking for people to teach the following subjects:  
  • General art and specialty art classes including drawing, sketching, painting, cartooning, sculpting, pottery, crocheting, carving and printmaking.
  • Theater and Drama classes
  • Dance classes including ballet, hip hop, jazz, and swing 
  • Music classes of various instruments
  • Sports and wellness classes and clinics including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, rugby, street hockey, archery, martial arts, gymnastics, yoga, Pilates, aerobics and sport specific conditioning
  • STEM curriculum classes (specializing in science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
  • Sewing, crocheting, knitting
  • Cooking
Work activities involve multiple skills and may include, but are not limited to, any or all the following depending on area of assignment, operational necessity, emergency services, special projects, and seasonal factors:
 
  • Plans, coordinates, and leads indoor and outdoor recreational activities.
  • Instruct and teach participants in various subjects including demonstrating proper techniques, methods, and fundamentals of classes or clinics of specific and varying subjects.
  • Offer guidance to participants, helping them improve their skills, reach specific preset goals and develop an enjoyment and passion for the subject.
  • Maintain a fun, safe and supportive environment for all participants to learn and grow at their own pace.
  • Evaluates participant progress and provide feedback on areas for improvement.
  • Encourage participation through effective communication, engaging subject matter and lesson plans, and an inspiring display of passion for the subject.
  • Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress, or any other incidents that occur during activities. Assist with onsite program registration where applicable.
  • Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at all times and render routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
  • Request and maintain needed supplies and equipment required for a successful program adhering to the appropriate program budget.
  • Set up before and clean up after all recreational programs to allow the use of shared spaces by multiple groups and activities.
Associated Functions:
  1. Attend various workshops, continuing education, meetings, seminars, and conferences.
  2. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  3. Assists with Parks and Recreation events and other programs and provide a high level of customer service to the public as needed.
  4. May operate a city vehicle for the purpose of transporting program participants in related program activities.

  • Effective teaching methods displaying a strong understanding of subject matter.
 Ability to:
  • Lead effective programs and activities for all ages.
  • Motivate and inspire individuals to develop a love and passion for the subject being taught.
  • Work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Take initiative and make sound decisions while being able to troubleshoot potentially problematic situations.
  • Communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Evaluate the feedback given by participants to improve classes and develop and constantly improving curriculum.
 
Supervisory Responsibility
No direct supervisory responsibilities though management of projects includes directing project related activities of the project team members.An equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions may be considered.
 
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Availability to run recreation programs in the evenings (4pm to 8pm) and Weekend days (9am to 4pm)
  • Minimum Age of 18 years.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification within three (3) months of hire.
  • Experience planning and leading programs in a paid or volunteer role.
  • Complete a comprehensive background screening to include credit check to be bonded for cash-handling and Washington Child and Adult Abuse background, prior to hire.
  • Valid state driver’s license and ability to provide a driver’s abstract showing a good driving record.
  • Patience, respectful, supportive, and fair approach to teaching.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies as needed for programming.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Work in organizing programs, classes or event planning and coordinating volunteers.
  • Would prefer if Recreation Leaders obtain and maintain a Food Handler’s Permit within three (3) months of hire.
 The physical demands and characteristics of the work environment described here are representative of those occurring in the performance of the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.
 
Work is primarily performed in a classroom with limited office work, must be able to travel from site to site, to other meetings and job locations. Work is also performed outdoors, visiting construction sites, in all types of terrain and weather conditions, around water, under dirty, uncomfortable spaces, with a noise level in the work environment that may be moderately loud, may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles or bloodborne pathogens, potential toxic or caustic chemicals, grease, smoke, gases, heat, cold, vibration, and other hazardous conditions at construction sites including vehicular traffic and construction equipment. Work requires manual dexterity, ability to communicate and observe details at varying ranges with accuracy, and the ability to move and position oneself as needed on a construction site and to maintain such activities throughout a work shift. Weekend and after-hours work may be required as well as after-hours response to situations and emergencies.
