This position, under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, will assist in the day-to-day operation of camp pre-planned activities such as themed arts and crafts and cooking activities, active and passive games, educational activities and weekly field trips. Counselors will be active in shaping the culture of our camp, so we are looking for energetic and enthusiastic people with a mind toward inclusive and safe play for all participants. Our goal is to collaboratively develop and implement community recreational programming and events serving all ages.

We are looking for people able or willing to learn how to:
- Communicate and work with a variety of ages and skill levels in various activities.
- Create, plan and lead a variety of engaging activities.
- Speak and perform in front of large groups.
- Identify the campers needs and ensure that everyone can enjoy the daily activities of camp in a safe and inclusive atmosphere.
- Problem solve and communicate effectively with youth participants and their parents/guardians, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Provide a safe, friendly, and encouraging environment to campers and co-workers.
- Supervise children in an open and outdoor environment.
- Responsible for the general wellbeing of the campers in your group.
- Maintain a fun, safe and supportive environment for all participants in both on-site camp activities and field trip locations.
- Lead fun age appropriate games and activities under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinator and Lead Camp Counselor.
- Encourage participation through effective communication, engaging campers through participation in activities, and maintaining a good relationship with all campers.
- Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress, or any other incidents that occur during activities.
- Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at all times, and render routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
- Set up before and clean up after all recreational programs to allow the use of shared spaces by multiple groups and activities.
- Assists with Parks and Recreation events and other programs and provide a high level of customer service to the public as needed.
- May operate a city vehicle for the purpose of transporting program participants in related program activities.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge of:
- General camp games and activities.
- Demonstrated customer service skills and energetic positive attitude.
- Curriculum development and lesson planning
- Working with children ages five (5) to fourteen (14).
- Be patient, respectful, supportive, and exhibit a fair approach to childcare.
- Carry equipment and supplies as needed for programming.
- Communicate both orally and in writing.
- Displays a positive outlook and professional demeanor.
- Evaluate the feedback given by participants to improve group activities.
- Lead effective programs and activities for all ages.
- Motivate and inspire individuals to develop a joy and passion for play.
- Take initiative and make sound decisions while being able to troubleshoot potentially problematic situations.
- Work in an outdoor environment and maintain awareness to ensure the safety of camp participants.
- Work independently as well as part of a team.
- Work with a variety of ages and be a positive role model for the campers.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- City-provided training to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification before the first day of camp.
- Must be available from 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- Camp Counselors are expected to be available to work the summer months with Camp running from the middle of June until the end of August. Complete a comprehensive background screening for Washington Child and Adult Abuse background check prior to hire.
- Valid state driver’s license and ability to provide a driver’s abstract showing a good driving record.
- Experience working with children.
- Work in organizing programs, classes or event planning and coordinating volunteers.
- Obtain and/or maintain a Food Worker Card.
Work is performed outdoors at City of Oak Harbor parks and facilities. Activity such as traversing and assisting clients may be required as may travel to other locations for recreational programming. Requires ability to sit, walk or stand, to remain stationary and move for extended periods of time, ability to move and lift items with assistance up to thirty (30) pounds. Work requires the ability to communicate information and ideas, ability to observe details at a close range, and normal visual and hearing acuity. May require strenuous physical activity.
