Do you enjoy working with children and want to help start an amazing camp filled with fun activities for the youth of Oak Harbor? We are looking for enthusiastic individuals that can oversee multiple groups of campers and counselors in a recreational setting. This position, under the direction and supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, will oversee the operation of camp functions and implement a variety pre-planned camp activities. The Lead Camp Counselor will also provide support to each of the camp’s group camp counselors enabling them to maintain fun, safe and supportive environment for their groups of campers. Our goal is to collaboratively develop and implement community recreational programming and events serving all ages.

Work requires the ability to communicate information and ideas, ability to observe details at a close range, and normal visual and hearing acuity. May require strenuous physical activity.

We are looking for people able or willing to learn how to:
- Communicate and work with a variety of ages and skill levels in various activities.
- Create, plan and lead a variety of engaging activities.
- Speak and perform in front of large groups.
- Oversee the timely rotations of a daily schedule to ensure all groups are able to participate in all planned activities with the appropriate amount of designated time.
- Problem solve and communicate effectively with youth participants and their parents/guardians, co-workers, and supervisors.
- Provide a safe, friendly, and encouraging environment to campers and co-workers.
- Supervise children in an open and outdoor environment.
- Responsible for the general wellbeing of all campers and counselors.
- Ensure that groups are following a daily and weekly plan of activities and that all camp activity supplies are ready and available to be set up at the appropriate times.
- Maintain a fun, safe and supportive environment for all participants in both on-site camp activities and field trip locations.
- Lead fun age appropriate games and activities under the guidance of the Recreation Coordinator and ensure all camp counselors have the ability to also do so.
- Encourage participation through effective communication, engaging counselors and campers through participation in activities, and maintaining a good relationship with all campers and counselors.
- Lead all camp group activities including field trips, special events, and day to day activities involving multiple groups. Lead counselors during group activities to ensure the safety and participation of all participants.
- Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress, or any other incidents that occur during activities.
- Observe necessary precautions to ensure the safety of participants and spectators at all times, and render routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
- Set up before and clean up after all recreational programs to allow the use of shared spaces by multiple groups and activities.
Associated Functions:
- Assists with Parks and Recreation events and other programs and provide a high level of customer service to the public as needed.
- May operate a city vehicle for the purpose of transporting program participants in related program activities.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- Work in an outdoor environment and maintain awareness to ensure the safety of camp participants.
- Work independently as well as part of a team.
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Experience working with children.
- Experience planning and leading programs in a paid or volunteer role.
- City-provided training to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification before the first day of camp.
- Must be available from 8am-6pm Monday through Friday
- Lead Camp Counselor is expected to be available to work the summer months with Camp running from the middle of June until the end of August.
- Complete a comprehensive background screening to include credit check, to be bonded for cash-handling and Washington Child and Adult Abuse background, prior to hire.
- Valid state driver’s license and ability to provide a driver’s abstract showing a good driving record.
- Must obtain and maintain a Washington State Department of Health (DOH) Food Worker Card, before the first day of camp, any related expense to obtain the card is covered by the City.
- Work in organizing programs, classes or event planning and coordinating volunteers.
