Position Summary
This position supervises and coordinates the activities of the civilian animal control unit tasked with enforcing City codes and ordinances for the licensing, care, and control of animals; and manages the functions of the City’s animal shelter and assigned staff.
Essential Functions
- Directs the work of and supervises division personnel. Provides training and instructions and ongoing training needs. Assigns tasks, reviews work and provides performance evaluation feedback. Recommends employee transfers, promotions, disciplinary action, and discharge. Reviews and approves time sheets, job assignment sheets.
- Ensures appropriate training for all personnel and maintains required documentation.
- Researches, recommends, and implements approved policy and procedures for operational effectiveness.
- Authorizes expenditures for operational needs.
- Coordinates the routine maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment and grounds keeping services as authorized.
- Oversees the handling, treatment, placement/flow behavior evaluations and overall care of all the animals admitted to the animal shelter.
- Oversees shelter operations; assists the public with questions regarding lost and adoptive animals; advises public on appropriate policies and procedures; releases animals from shelter for adoption or reclaim.
- Responds to requests for assistance; picks up sick, injured, stray and abandoned animals
- Receives and documents information regarding animal control issues.
- Coordinates veterinary care as necessary.
- Assists with daily animal and shelter care including cleaning the shelter; providing feed, water and care for animals; treating sick or injured animals; maintaining updated vaccinations.
- Maintains records for shelter; monitors and orders supplies and drugs; maintains accurate count of animals in shelter; logs animals in and out of shelter; prepares daily activity reports.
- Maintains and routinely updates shelter website.
- Evaluates animals for necessary euthanizing; conducts euthanization.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of City and State animal control laws, regulations and procedures.
- Knowledge of current practices and procedures in Animal Shelter management.
- Knowledge of principles and practices for capturing and handling a variety of wild and domestic animals.
- Knowledge of principles of animal behavior.
- Knowledge of specialized animal control equipment and techniques.
- Skill in answering calls and complaints involving animal control.
- Skill in advising owners of loose animals, leash laws and the necessity of keeping animals under control.
- Knowledge of management and supervisory practices & principles.
Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications
- High School Diploma/equivalent with three (3) years animal control experience.
- Previous lead or supervisory experience preferred.
- Must be a Certified Professional Animal Control Officer.
- Must possess a valid State of Tennessee driver’s license.
