What are the responsibilities and job description for the Library Clerk position at City of Oak Ridge Tennessee?
POSITION SUMMARY: Provides support to the programs and services of the Library; and provides responsive, courteous, and efficient customer service to patrons. Candidate must have demonstrated experience working with children and demonstrated experience utilizing MS Office Suite, particularly Excel. This position requires evening and weekend work.
PRIMARY JOB TASKS:
- Greet visitors; answers telephone and e-mail requests; assists customer or refers to appropriate personnel.
- Assists patrons in the location, referral, and selection of materials and related information; assists patrons in troubleshooting basic hardware issues on public computers; assists patrons with basic internet and popular software navigation.
- Conducts circulation activities including charging and discharging materials, accepts payments for fines, lost and damaged items.
- Issues and renews library cards for patrons; ensures patrons’ accounts are accurate and up to date.
- Sets up and balances cash drawer daily; Empties and processes book drop.
- Shelves books; and reads shelves to maintain order as needed.
- Monitors reserve and hold materials; enters and tracks pertinent data; and contacts patrons by mail, telephone or e-mail notifying them of material availability.
- Monitors and maintains newspapers and periodicals; discards old newspapers and straightens shelves; maintains periodicals.
- Imports and edits MARC records from state and national databases.
- Assists with or conducts simple cataloging; sorts into appropriate categories; enters materials in catalog and prepares labels for library materials.
- Assists in running the volunteer program: creates, prints and disseminates volunteer materials as needed; maintains spreadsheet of volunteer hours; contacts volunteers about training and schedules; assigns work and follows up on completion of volunteer assignments; assists in annual

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form.
- Must be proficient in workplace English and spelling.
- Ability to read City policies and procedures; written instructions, general correspondence; SDS sheets, safety manuals, maps, etc.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma and one (1) year of customer service experience, preferably in a library setting.
- Must meet library core competencies within one year of hire date.
