Description

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Pool Manager is responsible for the supervision and direction of the aquatics program and staff, implementation and coordination of aquatics program, including meeting the program objectives, and activities at sthe aquatics facilities. The Pool Manager is expected to provide leadership and oversight for various recreation and community services programs as it relates to aquatics.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Pool Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing aquatics programs and activities at the Royse Memorial Plunge. The Pool Manager is expected to perform routine staff work and take specific responsibility for the assigned aquatic recreation programs and oversee temporary and seasonal personnel. Specific key duties may include, but are not limited to the following:


  • Organizes, develops, schedules, and supervises day to day operations of the pool including staffing, programming, and supplies.
  • Responsible for training and supervision of part time seasonal employees involved in the aquatics recreation programs.
  • Establishes performance objectives for programs and employees under his/her supervision.
  • Accurate and timely completion of pertinent record keeping, reports, testing and program paperwork.
  • Oversees and enforces the ongoing implementation of the Aquatics Safety Plan and Emergency Action Plan.
  • Act in the capacity of a pool lifeguard.
  • Responsible for maintain on-site security and safety of participants, staff and others in the pool area, preparation and maintenance of incident report records.
  • Enforce City and program rules and guidelines and conduct necessary discipline of staff.
  • Maintain a safe and clean swimming pool environment.
  • Conduct and attend pertinent staff meetings as required during the season.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

ABILITY TO
  • Properly implement supervision procedures and techniques.
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
  • Prepare clear and concise publicity and informational materials, reports, correspondence, and other written materials.
  • Analyze problems, evaluating alternatives, and making creative recommendations.
  • Prepare detailed event schedules (using software) and accounting reports on event proceeds.
  • Work irregular hours, shifts, or weekends as required.
  • Respond effectively to program issues and customer interest.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work independently.

KNOWLEDGE OF
  • Principles and practices of aquatics program planning, development, and administration.
  • Pertinent health, fire, and safety regulations affecting the use of the pool including specialized first aid in pubic pool aquatic facilities situations.
  • Standard business practices and procedures.
  • Standard program evaluation methods and report writing procedures.
  • Principles and techniques of effective supervision and training.
  • Aquatics program activities such as swim and water safety classes, water sports, and exercise programs.
  • Rules and equipment used in aquatics programs.
  • Ticket sales and accounting procedures.

Typical Qualifications

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three (3) years of responsible experience in the aquatics recreation program, preferably in a municipal setting that includes a public pool and/or similar facility, which also included working with youth. Some college course work that includes instruction specifically in recreation, leisure and/or aquatic programs is highly desirable. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be determined by the City to meet minimum expectations.
Certifications and Licenses

  • Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and a good driving record.
  • Must possess valid certifications in Lifeguard Training, Title 22, CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
The following certificates are desirable:
  • Water Safety Instructor Trainer
  • Aquatics Fitness Instructor
  • Certified Aquatic Administrator

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business reports and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, training materials, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from officials, community groups, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The time spent performing the duties of this job are divided between work in an indoor office environment and work in the field meeting with groups and participating in community events and services.
In the Office:
The employee typically works at a desk entering and retrieving data from a computer or terminal, sitting for extended periods of time with the ability to move about at will. A computer keyboard is used to enter and retrieve data and requires continuous or repetitive arm-hand movements.
In the Field:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee works near swimming pools and various types of recreation equipment and is occasionally exposed to the risk of slipping and falling. The employee will work in a variety of weather conditions with some exposure to the elements. Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
