What you will typically be responsible for:
- Officiating at City sports and athletic events.
- Determining methods of play and interpreting and enforcing game rules.
- Maintaining knowledge of recreation and sports events rules and regulations.
- Maintaining order and enforcing safety procedures for both participants and spectators during sporting events.
- Ensuring that courts, fields, and equipment are in proper and safe playing condition.
- Resolving scoring and player disputes.
- Recording game scores and reporting game wins and losses.

Minimum Requirements for Application
This is a public contact position. The City highly encourages all bilingual candidates to apply! Some positions may require bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin. Under the authority of Civil Service Rules Section 5.03, if a position requires bilingual language skills, only those candidates who have indicated they are bilingual in the required language(s) will be referred. Bilingual candidates will be required to successfully pass a language proficiency test if selected for hire.
Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications may be acceptable.
Education: Successful completion of the eighth grade.
Experience: One (1) year of experience officiating or playing in an assigned sport.
Candidates must be sixteen (16) years of age or older at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications:
Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin are highly desirable for certain positions.
License/Other Requirements: Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
Candidates who receive conditional offers of employment will be required to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance, have drug testing, and a tuberculosis (TB) screening.
- Must pass a thorough background investigation.
- Required to wear issued uniform on duty.
- Required to maintain issued uniform and keep it in presentable condition.
- Required to work evenings and weekends as assigned.
Work Permits
Minors will be subject to state guidelines and restrictions governing their employment while employed with the City of Oakland. This shall include work permits, records, hours worked and time reporting guidelines. Minors seeking information regarding work permits should contact their local school district. When applicable, work permits must be obtained prior to beginning employment.

This is an at-will position, exempt from the provisions of the City of Oakland Civil Service Rules, per Charter Section 902. All applications received will be forwarded to the Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development Department for further consideration.
