What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Technician III position at City of Ocala?
This is semi-professional civil engineering work of a technical nature involved in the preparation of design plans, engineering studies and construction estimates for City projects. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Licensed Professional Engineer; however, this employee is expected to exercise some independent judgement and initiative in the performance of these duties.Plan Production: Performs or oversees design and drafting work of a more difficult nature in connection with street, traffic, water, sewer, drainage and sidewalk construction. Prepares plans for simple building and structural improvements. Works individually or acts as a project leader with one or more technicians to produce sets of construction plans. Coordinates with project engineers to produce plans in a timely manner to meet various goals or review stages. Operates various plotters, scanners, and printers to produce original drawings and copies.
Estimates Quantities and Construction Costs: Estimates total quantities to be constructed by line items on projects for bidding purposes. Estimates cost of construction based on these quantities using past line item bids or by receiving quotes from vendors.
Field Investigation and Engineering Studies: May assist with field engineering investigations and engineering studies related to gathering engineering design data and in support of engineering troubleshooting City infrastructure including but not limited to streets, traffic, water, sewer, drainage and sidewalk systems.
Field Checks Projects: Makes periodic field trips during the drafting and design of plans to verify information. May assist an engineer during project construction with field visits for inspection purposes or to answer design questions.
Researches Records: Researches available records for asbuilt construction or property information.
Reviews Plans: Reviews the work of other technicians for quality, accuracy and conformance to GIS, drafting and engineering standards.
Assists With Training: Helps train technicians on various subjects related to Civil Engineering.
Office Routines: Participates in or oversees various office routines such as filing, printing, and maintaining maps and data records. Assists with issuance of Permits. Fills out requests for survey work
Attendance & Performance: Required to report to work at the appointed time hour as scheduled, and to work the entire assigned shift.Graduation from a two-year college or technical school program in design drafting, civil technology, surveying, and graphic information systems (GIS) or pre-engineering with advanced course work in computer aided drafting, supplemented by eight years of progressive design drafting work in the civil engineering field. Additional experience can be substituted on a year for year basis for education, or a comparable combination of training and experience.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATES
Valid Florida Operator Driver's License.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Knowledge of the basic principles, practices, and techniques of civil engineering. Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Knowledge of Civil Engineering Design and its graphical application.
Skilled in the use of computers with emphasis on Auto-Cad software, GIS and other civil design software in connection with the design and engineering of streets, traffic, water, sewer, drainage and sidewalk construction.
Ability to plan and monitor the work of a small technical crew engaged in engineering studies, drafting and office routines. Ability to design and estimate cost of more complex additions and revisions to improvements. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, City officials, employees, and the general public. Ability to meet multiple deadlines. Ability to communicate clearly and politely. Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
