This is a semi-skilled position with emphasis on departmental operations directly involved with locating and inspection of all underground Water Resources utilities (water lines, sewer gravity mains, sewer force mains, and reuse lines) of the City of Ocala within the City’s service territory. The position also requires individuals to perform construction work relating to excavating pipes for accuracy. Reports to the Department Director or Designee.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Ability to communicate with customers in person and over the phone regarding the ticket submitted by "811" as stipulated by Law. 2. Utilize various electronic equipment including probe rod to find and mark the location of underground utilities. 3. Understand the underground Utilities infrastructure. 4. Secures work area by providing designated traffic control devices in appropriate position. May be required to work as a flag person. 5. Maintains positive working relationship with department personnel, other governmental agencies, customers and the public. 6. Assists in maintaining an adequate supply of tools and related equipment needed to accomplish daily assignments. 7. Performs tests and evaluates new technologies related to location tools and products and makes recommendations for improvements to our system. 8. Availability during emergencies is required. 9. This work may also be performed under emergency situations or during inclement weather. May be called upon to assist field crews. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma or GED is required, plus 5 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Must possess a valid Florida Driver's License with an acceptable driving record. Must possess minimum "2" certification in Water Distribution and a "B" in Sewer Collection or obtain a "2" certification in Water Distribution and "B" certification in Sewer Collection within four years. Within six months of employment/promotion, must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License, Class "B" with an acceptable driving record and an endorsement for tank vehicles (N). RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT Must reside within 45 minutes of City Hall (110 SE Watula Ave) using Map Quest.ANALYTICAL ABILITY / PROBLEM SOLVING MODERATELY STRUCTURED. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret and extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Under immediate supervision, performs GENERAL ASSIGNMENTS of work with PERIODIC CHECK of performance by supervisor. MENTAL DEMAND INTENSE; Operation requiring sustained directed thinking to analyze, solve, or plan highly variable, administrative, professional, or technical tasks involving complex problems or mechanisms. USE OF MACHINES, EQUIPMENT AND/OR COMPUTER Regular use of highly complex machines and equipment; specialized or advanced software programs. ACCURACY Probably errors would normally not be detected in succeeding operations and would definitely have serious effects in relationships with patrons and/or with the operations of other segments of the organization. PUBLIC CONTACT Extensive contacts with various diversified sectors of the public environment; wherein, the contacts are of extreme importance and failure to exercise proper judgment can lead to substantial losses to the organization. EMPLOYEE CONTACT Contacts of considerable importance within the department or office. Requires tact in discussing problems and presenting data and making recommendations.
