Participates will receive comprehensive training, working across various divisions such as :

Crisis Negotiations

UAS Program (Unmanned Aerial Support / Drone Team)

Neighborhood and Homeless Outreach

Beach Team

This initiative is designed to prepare candidates for the challenges and responsibilities of public safety while equipping them with skills and experience critical for a future in law enforcement.

This is an unpaid Volunteer / Intern position for Active Duty Service members participating in the SkillBridge program prior to completion of military service.

Examples of Duties

Police Officers Interns will provided assistance to the Police Department performing a variety of duties including assisting with special events such as setting up barricades, traffic control, delivering and setting up equipment and materials; pick up, transport, deliver and place into storage archived files; assist with firing range operations including collection and transport of range revenues; provides courier service to Department; may assist customers at the public counter of the Police Department; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of :

  • Traffic safety procedures and laws.
  • Police Department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to :

  • Communicate accurate information clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Control uncooperative individuals;
  • Utilize correct English, grammar and syntax when conveying information;
  • Remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places;
  • Make accurate observations;
  • Demonstrate firearms proficiency;
  • Make sound judgments and take quick actions in emergencies;
  • Operate a variety of motor vehicles;
  • Follow verbal and written instructions;
  • Read and comprehend various documents written in standard English text; and
  • Demonstrate physical agility.
  • Experience and Training

    Experience : Must be a current Active Duty Service Member participating in the Skillbridge program.

    Training : High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

    Special Requirements : Possess a valid Class C Driver's license at time of appointment. Pass a thorough background investigation, including Pre-Investigation Questionnaire (PIQ). Not have been convicted of a felony or serving probation.

    Candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be eligible for intern consideration.

    Note : Prospective intern will undergo, and must successfully pass, a background reference check (including fingerprinting) examination and Pre Investigation Questionnaire.

    If your answer is "NO" to any of the following questions, you are not eligible for this position with the Oceanside Police Department.Employment requirements and conditionsAs of today's date, are you at least 20-1 / 2 years old? (You must be 21 years old at time of hire)

    Do you possess a high school diploma or GED certificate?

    Are you a citizen of the U.S., or lawfully admitted for permanent resident in the U.S. and in the process of becoming a United States citizen

    Are you willing to make California as your principal residence throughout employment as a law enforcement officer?

    Are you willing to work overtime, varying shifts, weekends and holidays?

    Are you willing to wear a uniform and comply with department grooming standards (hair shall be kept neat, clean, and well groomed, no beards, mustache trimmed, minimal jewelry, etc.)?

    Do you understand that the following are employment conditions that are required throughout employment as a law enforcement officer and are you willing to comply? a) You are responsible for your own transportation to and from work.b) You must accept assignments to work at any location within the City, and travel in and out of the County on specific assignments.c) If justified by existing laws and department policies and procedures, law enforcement officers must be willing and able to use deadly force (i.e., handgun, etc.) to protect themselves and others.

    If your answer is "Yes" to any of the following questions, you are not eligible for this position with the Oceanside Police Department.Have you ever used illegal drugs, other than marijuana, in the past five (5) years?

    Have you used any hallucinogens (mushrooms, LSD, peyote, mescaline, etc.) in the past fifteen (15) years?

    Have you ever sold any illegal substances, including steroids?

    Have you ever injected any illegal substances, not including steroids?

    Have you taken the POST PELLETB written exam with another agency, within 6 months from the City of Oceanside's test date? If yes, please attach a copy of your T-score to your application.

    If yes, do you have a passing score of 46 or higher?

    Do you possess an associate's degree or higher from an accredited college? If yes, please attach a copy of your degree to your application.
