Laboratory Custodian

Scope of Responsibility: Maintains the cleanliness of the laboratory facility. Cleans laboratory glassware according to strict Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) regulations. This position is critical to the overall function of the laboratory.
Essential Functions: Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintains high level of cleanliness in the laboratory.
- Cleans all floors by sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping, as required.
- Cleans restrooms.
- Dusts all furniture areas and cleans lab cabinet tops as assigned.
- Gathers and disposes of trash and wastes daily.
- Washes windows.
- Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies. Informs Laboratory Manager when cleaning supplies need to be purchased.
- Washes and dries laboratory towels.
- Washes laboratory glassware by hand and operates automatic glassware washers.
- Utilizes cleaning techniques in accordance with EPA, TCEQ, and NELAP regulations. Proper glassware cleaning is critical to analytical quality control.
- Disposes of samples. Documents sample disposal.
- Obtains general understanding of laboratory safety requirements.
- Maintains cleanliness of the side-walk around the outside of the laboratory building.
- Supports the divisional operations with regular and timely attendance.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Odessa and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with visitors and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training and Experience Guidelines: High school diploma or GED certification. Glassware cleaning and building maintenance in a laboratory or hospital-type environment where high cleanliness and sanitization standards must be maintained is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Ability to carry out assigned tasks related to cleaning buildings and facilities.
- Ability to do physical labor for extended periods, including standing for prolonged periods and frequent heavy lifting.
- Ability to quickly and thoroughly wash specialized glassware according to EPA, TCEQ, and NELAP requirements.
- Ability to read, write, understand, and follow oral and written instructions in English.
- General knowledge of computer programs and their use.
- Ability to accurately enter data into computer.
- Ability to work alone or with others with little direct supervision to complete tasks quickly and efficiently.
- Ability to deal effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
- Works a forty (40) hour work week, normally Monday through Friday.
License and certification requirements: A Texas State Driver's License is required.
Special Requirements: Will be exposed to acids and other hazardous chemicals. Will be exposed to wastewater samples with unpleasant odors and unknown characteristics. Must be able to stand for long periods of time and lift approximately fifty (50) pounds. Cannot be color blind. Some after-hours work may be required.
