The City of Ontario Information Technology Agency has excellent part-time internship opportunities for motivated individuals interested in gaining valuable training and experience in the field of Information Technology and Cybersecurity. The Administrative Interns will have the opportunity to assist with IT operational assignments, tasks, and security. This position plays a vital role in supporting the agency’s mission to revolutionize business operations and security, pushing the boundaries of innovation to achieve exceptional outcomes. The Administrative Intern may be assigned to one of the IT Agency's DivisionsSystems, Operations, Applications, or Cybersecurity. The current opportunities are in the OperationsApplications, and Cybersecurity Divisions. 

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a passion for learning and a desire to gain valuable hands-on IT experience in a public sector setting. Working alongside technical support staff, the Administrative Intern will be exposed to a wide range of technical assignments and IT projects including the City's IT Help Desk, asset management, e-waste processing, hardware, computer peripherals, desktop rollouts, requirements gathering, software upgrades, project implementation and coordination, report writing, programming, geographic information system (GIS), and cybersecurity. As with any internship experience, individuals with a desire to learn as much as possible from experienced employees will have the greatest benefit from their internship experience. Additionally, the successful candidates will be role models for the City’s Customer Service Philosophy– Empathy, Respect, and Problem Solving– and emulate the qualities of a "Five Tool Player"– Leader, Thinker, Operator, Communicator, and Public Servant.

The administrative Intern is a paid, part-time/temporary position, scheduled to work no more than 29 hours per week and is not eligible to participate in the City's health insurance or retirement plans.

The essential functions typically performed by the Administrative Intern assigned to the Information Technology Agency include the following:
  • Assists members of management, professional, and technical staff by performing basic administrative and technical assignments.
  • Responds to requests for information. 
  • Provides GIS and computer technical support. 
  • May operate a city vehicle in the performance of job duties. 
May perform the following essential functions when assigned to the Operations Division:
  • Assists with imaging and configuring computers and other related equipment for city staff. 
  • Assists with answering the Help Desk phone line and monitoring online ticket requests. 
  • Assists with troubleshooting technical issues related to software systems, computers, laptops, phones, and other devices.
  • Maintains and reviews City equipment asset database.
  • Assists with maintaining City surplus and e-waste equipment.
May perform the following essential functions when assigned to the Applications Division:
  • Assist with processing software access requests. 
  • Maintains and reviews software assets and licenses citywide.
  • Assists with installing software applications and troubleshooting issues. 
  • Assists with testing software updates and new releases.
  • Assists with preparing and maintaining software documentation and analytics reports.
  • Assists with researching software applications solutions.
May perform the following essential functions when assigned to the Cybersecurity Division:
  • Assists with researching and evaluating current and new security strategies to protect confidential digital information. 
  • Assists with researching potential cyber threats and proposing countermeasures to help secure the City's network.
  • Assists with developing cybersecurity and IT policies and procedures.
  • Assists with creating security awareness materials.
  • Assists with maintaining and reviewing City equipment asset database.
  • Assists with creating technical documentation and training guides for security tools. 
  • Assists with report creation or data analyses utilizing data from software systems and databases.

Education

Equivalent to completion of two years of college at an accredited college/university with major course work in Information Technology, Information Systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Science, Computer Science, Data Science/Analytics, Cybersecurity, or a related field.

NOTE: Proof of successful completion of two years of college coursework must be provided by way of attachment to your online application or as an email attachment sent to the Hiring Agency Representative at, or before, time of the reference check process. Acceptable forms of proof include Unofficial Transcripts, Official Transcripts, Photos and/or Photocopies of Institutional Degree/Certifications. Failure to provide the required documentation at, or before, time of the reference check process will result in disqualification.

Licenses

Valid California Class C driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment.

Desirables

Current enrollment in upper division courses of a Bachelor's Degree program or recently graduated from a Bachelor’s Degree program related to Information Technology, Information Systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Computer Science, Computer Science, Data Science/Analytics, Cybersecurity, or a related field. Basic knowledge of devices such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, and printers. Knowledge of operating systems and programs including Windows and Microsoft Office. Knowledge of SQL queries, mapping with the ArcGIS software suite, and/or programming with Python, JavaScript or similar programming languages. Knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks and best practices.How to Apply
