SUMMARY

Under the supervision and direction of the City Clerk, provides general administrative support to the Office of the City Clerk and Mayor/Commission.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepares reports and records of assigned duties; acts as a community relations officer; utilizes firearms, communications equipment, electronic detectors, audio-visual equipment, and similar devices; works at the complaint desk screening requests for service, answering telephones, and performing various clerical and administrative tasks as required; oversees custody, care, and control of prisoners; explains laws, ordinances and general information to citizens; conducts investigations at the scene of a crime or accident; gathers, preserves and correlates evidence; locates witnesses; issues citations and makes arrests; participates in crime patrol duties; serves as training officer; may coordinate school crossing guards and auxiliary police program; transports and receives property, evidence and prisoners; coordinates assistance and referrals for elderly and indigent persons; maintains knowledge of known criminals or persons suspected of criminal activity; interrogates suspects; prepares cases against suspects; investigates cases of juvenile delinquency and submits reports to juvenile court; assists in the supervision of juveniles held in custody; coordinates and functions with other operational units and serves as a part of such unit when assigned; is responsible for assigned police cruiser; performs other duties as required

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

· Considerable knowledge of modem office practices and procedures.

· Knowledge of office equipment.

· Ability to compose, type and proofread routine correspondence.

· Give sound judgment and the ability to make minor decisions in accordance with city and departmental policies.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other departments, officials and the public.

· Considerable knowledge of the use of computers for varied applications.

· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

· Ability to write clear and concise reports, memoranda, directives and letters

· Ability to exercise judgement and initiative in the performance of work

· Must be able to work independently

· Maintain strict confidentiality of privileged information


EDUCATION

High school education includes or supplemented by secretarial or business courses and considerable responsible experience in a variety of secretarial assignments relative to municipal functions.

Computer and various office equipment.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides a required knowledges skills and abilities

Directs and coordinates the work of Police Corporals and Officers; general and specific assignments are received as to details and work is normally performed with latitude for use of independent judgment in the selection of work methods and procedures, subject to review through analysis of reports, personal inspection, and discussion; may be assigned to direct the work of Police Department employees who perform support services and duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

On a continuous basis sit at a desk and/or stand for long periods of time. Frequently required to walk. Frequently required to see, hear, and talk with employees and the public. Frequently

required to read and/or present documents, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means, use a calculator to compute figures. On occasion it is requested to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or smell. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment. On occasion it is required to lift or carry weights up to 20 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
