SUMMARY

This is skilled water safety work involving the prevention of accidents and injuries at a City swimming pool.

NATURE OF WORK

An employee in this class is responsible for safeguarding patrons at a City swimming pool by preventing injury or loss of life through drowning and for administering first aid or artificial respiration. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations governing the public use of swimming pools, and by the recognized practices of water safety. Supervision is received from a superior who makes work assignments and reviews work for orderliness and rule enforcement by visual inspection and conferences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintains order and discipline among swimmers and other people at an assigned City swimming pool.

Rescues bathers in distress; apply resuscitation and administer first aid when necessary.

Assists pool managers in pool procedures such as inspection of rescue equipment and collection of water samples for tests, when assigned assists in the teaching of swimming classes or other aquatic programs.

Maintains general appearance and cleanliness of pool area when able to do so without distraction from lifeguarding.

Participates in performing custodial tasks as applies to pool decks and surfaces, offices, locker rooms, bath houses and other support buildings.

Conducts chemical test for pool water quality and monitors pool water temperature. Vacuums pool and cleans pool walls.

Maintains daily maintenance and pool chemical usage logs.

May operate and clean pool filtration equipment.

Collects pool admission and registration fees. Monies must be receipted and submitted to the Parks Director or designee at the end of the shift

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

· Knowledge of approved water rescue methods and specific first aid techniques

· Ability to learn rules and regulations relating to pool activities rapidly and to exercise tact, firmness and good judgment in enforcing such rules and regulations

· Ability to prevent dangerous situations from arising, to recognize emergencies and to take effective action

· Skills in swimming, lifesaving and first aid

· Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

· Physical strength and agility necessary to perform lifesaving rescue

EDUCATION

High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Possession of a current Lifeguard Training Certification, which includes CPR for Professional Rescuer or equivalent.

Must be able to pass the City of Opa-locka performance test, which may include swimming, running, and simulated rescue exercises

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be at least 18 years of age.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

General and specific assignments are received as to beats or details and work is normally performed with latitude for the use of independent judgment in the selection of work methods and procedures, subjects to review through analysis of reports, personal inspection, and discussion

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Directs and coordinates the work of Police Corporals and Officers; general and specific assignments are received as to details and work is normally performed with latitude for use of independent judgment in the selection of work methods and procedures, subject to review through analysis of reports, personal inspection, and discussion; may be assigned to direct the work of Police Department employees who perform support services and duties.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

On a continuous basis sit at a desk and/or stand for long periods of time. Frequently required to walk. Frequently required to see, hear, and talk with employees and the public. Frequently required to read and/or present documents, write or use keyboard to communicate through written means, use a calculator to compute figures. On occasion it is requested to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or smell. Intermittently twist and reach office equipment. On occasion it is required to lift or carry weights up to 20 pounds. Specific vision requirements include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
