DEFINITION OF THE POSITION

As a Police Cadet you will have the opportunity to assist our amazing Police Department staff with a wide variety of non-sworn duties in various Police Divisions, including investigations, traffic, crime lab, and/or administration.  This is a great way to learn more about what Police work is all about and make an imprint on your community at the same time.

The following duties represent the principal job duties; however, they are not all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.  Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.


  • Performs a wide variety of routine to complex clerical duties to support departmental or divisional operations, including processing officers' daily logs, filing, data entry, photocopying, film developing, and ordering supplies as needed.
  • Checks in, delivers, and releases evidence.
  • Prepares, mails, and processes alarm permit applications.
  • Screens calls, visitors, and mail; assists public at front counter and directs public to appropriate locations and/or staff; learns and assists in interpreting and applying regulations, policies, procedures, systems, rules, and precedents in response to inquiries and complaints from the public; directs callers to appropriate City staff as necessary.
  • Maintains and arranges activities and events as assigned.
Knowledge of:
  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the work.
  • Word processing methods, techniques, and programs.
  • Basic principles of record keeping.
  • English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and city staff.

Ability to:
  • Respond to and effectively prioritize multiple phone calls and other requests for service.
  • Learn, interpret, and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Perform responsible clerical support work with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
  • Learn and understand the organization and operation of the City and of outside agencies as necessary to assume assigned responsibilities.
  • Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.

Education and Experience:

Candidates must be high school seniors, or, enrolled in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university in a field applicable to law enforcement. All students must have at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA), and if in college, must maintain a minimum of 12 units per semester to be considered for, and to continue with, employment in the Police Cadet position.

Licenses and Certifications:

Possession of a valid California driver's license by time of hire, auto insurance, and a satisfactory driving record.
Physical Demands:
Must possess mobility to work in the field and in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; vision to read printed materials, a computer screen, and examine evidence; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking on uneven terrain and landscapes when performing parking enforcement duties.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, typewriter keyboard, or calculator and to operate parking enforcement related tools and equipment.  Position in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work.  Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions:
This position requires regular and reliable attendance and the employee’s physical presence at the workplace.  May be required to work various shifts, including, but not limited to, early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, at a variety of City locations.
