Equipment Operator I (Streets & Roadside Maintenance)
Summary :
Performs skilled tasks in the construction and maintenance of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, traffic sign maintenance, tree trimming and removal, and related areas of work. Performs manual labor tasks in a wide variety of maintenance and construction work. Assignments require some degree of skill, which may have been taught as on the job training. Duties are generally routine and normally performed under the direction of a Equipment Operator III with some degree of independence. Will operate a truck and other work-related equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Leads and instructs work crew in installing asphalt materials in connection with paving and repairs of asphalt surface.
Operates jackhammer, pumps, concrete / asphalt saws, chain saws, roller, edger, weed-eater, leaf blower, brush chipper, stump grinder and related equipment.
Leads crew in setting forms and installing concrete.
Operates trucks and other job-related equipment (may include operation of aerial bucket truck).
Leads crew in maintaining streets, rights of way, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and traffic signs.
Leads crew in trimming and removing trees on City properties and rights of way.
Leads crew in installing and removing special event signage.
Assists in keeping assigned workspace, vehicles and equipment clean and in operational order.
Prepares daily labor and material reports.
Participates in on-call and after-hours duties as assigned. Must be available for overtime and emergency call-outs when necessary.
Assists in preparation for, response to, and recovery from, the impacts of a wide variety of disasters or emergency situations and may be temporarily assigned to other duties, locations, and shifts.
Meets attendance requirements.
Promotes positive customer service environment internally and externally.
Performs other job-related functions as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities :
Assists in leading and directing work site crew in daily operations. May perform other supervisory duties as assigned.
Education and / or Experience :
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent recognized certificate.
Must have served successfully as Equipment Operator I or equivalent for at least six (6) months or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Qualification Requirements :

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license and the ability to obtain a valid Florida Commercial Drivers' License class B or above with air brake endorsement within six (6) months of employment.

All applicants applying for a position that requires a CDL and employees currently holding a CDL as required by their position description are subject to pre-employment and continuing post-employment drug and alcohol testing. Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Certification within six (6) months of employment.
Fork Lift Operator Certification within six (6) months of employment.
Experience in performing a variety of maintenance and repair tasks.
Knowledge of the tools, methods, materials and equipment used in the performance of street maintenance related work.
Knowledge of current traffic rules and regulations.
Ability to understand and follow oral and / or written instructions.

Sufficient physical strength and agility to do manual labor for extended periods of time and under adverse weather conditions.
Ability to move up to 75 lbs. over a distance of 100 feet.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to climb, balance, stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Sufficient auditory perception and speaking ability for radio communication.

Electrical lines are often in the vicinity of work being performed.
