General Description
Responsible for the care and implementation of the plan for the facility for the shift. The facility deals primarily with the treatment of patients who suffer from psychiatric disorders and mental health conditions, so they are schooled in basic nursing care with further training in dealing and controlling patients in varying levels of mental derangement, whether acute or chronic schizophrenia, psychosis or degenerative cognitive breakdown such as dementia. The Nurse Supervisor assesses the delivery of nursing care, helps to identify areas for improvement and collaborates with nursing personnel to make those improvements. As many patients are hospitalized because they are a danger to themselves and others, Nurse Supervisors are responsible for maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff during their shift as well as responding to behavioral emergencies and monitoring the safe handling of the crisis. The Nurse Supervisor is responsible for shared administrative duties and evaluation of unit activities during their shift. The Nurse Supervisor is also responsible for assigning, scheduling, coordinating, organizing, and directing work activities throughout the hospital for their assigned shift and the oncoming shift.

This position is eligible for an appointment incentive of $13,500.00 to the selected applicant who agrees to work for the facility for a minimum period of twelve (12) months.
Example of Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates nursing services for the facility during a shift
- Responsible for the supervision of subordinate nursing employees in the absence of the nurse manager
- Monitors delivery of psychiatric and medical nursing care services
- Assists in continuous quality improvement practices
- Assists in promoting continuing nursing education
- Collaborates with other departments to improve the care for patients
- Organizes staffing throughout the hospital per shift
- Responds to behavioral emergencies to ensure safe and proper crisis prevention intervention in each situation
- Keeps Chief Nurse Officer, Assistant Chief Nurse Officer and Nurse Managers informed of unit issues
- Acts as liaison with families, organizations and others outside the facility in meeting the facility's mission and goals
- Exchanges information with others clearly and concisely, verbally and written
- Provides information to the unit staff and other departments on a timely basis
- Assists with the training of unit personnel
- Has the ability to teach de-escalation techniques to other health care professionals to help people manage their emotions and behavior
- Possesses knowledge of hospital policy and procedure as well as regulatory standards
- Coordinates hospital wide Adult Protective Services Policy
Minimum Qualifications
Education : None.
Licensure / Certifications :
Current West Virginia licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
Experience :
Four (4) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in nursing.
Internal Applicants Only :
Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience as a Registered Nurse and / or a specialty nursing classification (i.e. Charge Nurse, Infection Control Nurse, QAPI Nurse, etc.) may substitute for the required education and experience.
