The Assistant City Engineer performs professional civil engineering work at the direction of and under the supervision of the City Engineer. This position is responsible for assisting with the design, construction, and inspection of engineering projects related to public infrastructure, including streets, bridges, water systems, and stormwater management. The role requires a strong understanding of civil engineering principles, construction practices, and relevant local, state, and federal regulations. This position also involves overseeing project teams, coordinating with other departments, and ensuring that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety standards and engineering best practices.
Serves as the acting City Engineer in the absence of the City Engineer.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed herein are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:
- Knowledge of basic mathematics, elementary algebra, and plane geometry.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of intermediate to advanced civil engineering.
- Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment used in engineering field surveying.
- Advanced knowledge of terminology, symbols, codes and standard abbreviations used in civil engineering work.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical literature, laws, rules, regulations, descriptions, construction plans, blueprints, plot plans, topographic maps, etc., related to Civil Engineering.
- Ability to use appropriate formulae used in determining exact locations and measurements (lines, grades, areas, etc.).
- Ability to interpret and apply written instructions.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of pertinent Federal and State regulations.
- Knowledge of public bidding procedures, preparation of bid packages, and bid review.
- Working knowledge of industry standard CADD software, HydroCAD, GIS, Microsoft Word, and Excel software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, specialized background, training and experience.
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and four (4) years or its part time equivalent of engineering experience, one (1) year of which shall have bene in a supervisory capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current, valid, license to practice as a professional engineer issued by the New York State Department of Education, or the ability to obtain a license within 12 months of appointment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Proficiency in CAD software, including AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Strong understanding of construction principles and schematics
- Experience in project management and scheduling
- Familiarity with construction estimating and management tools such as Bluebeam and GIS
- Knowledge of geotechnical engineering and water treatment processes
- Excellent technical writing and drafting skills
