DIVISION: Recreation
LOCATION: Various locations within the Parks and Recreation facilities.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Recreation Supervisor
DIRECTION OF OTHERS: Lifeguards and Guest Service Staff
NATURE OF WORK: Monitor activity on pool decks, beaches and in water for overall safety of guests at each facility; prevent and respond to emergencies. General overall set-up, maintenance and up-keep of the facilities, equipment and amenities.
2025 Seasonal / Temporary Position
Tentative Start Date: May 2024- Supervise daily operation of seasonal staff according to established policies and guidelines.
- Monitor seasonal/temporary staff schedules and adjust as necessary.
- Assign seasonal/temporary staff tasks.
- Ensure all staff rules, regulations, and safety practices are properly enforced.
- Ensure a healthy and sanitary facility for employees and guests.
- Ensure admissions and concessions policies are completed to the standard outlined in the City of Owatonna’s Cash Handling Policy and procedures established by the Parks Recreation Department.
- Ensure guests receive appropriate first aid and proper documentation is completed and reported.
- Possess a thorough knowledge and application of lifeguarding surveillance.
- Familiar with emergency procedures. Recognize and maintain a high level of readiness to respond to emergency situations.
- Understand and implement procedures for weather, medical, environmental, and other emergencies. Give direction in emergency situations.
- Assist guests and participants as needed, including administering basic First Aid and Lifeguarding skills as outlined by the American Red Cross and Parks & Recreation.
- Inspect facilities and equipment on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions to Supervisor.
- Perform light maintenance as required but not limited to event set-up, general cleaning, emptying garbage containers and filling supplies.
- Complete required records and reports.
- Attend and assist with pre-season training workshops, and regular in-service training sessions.
- Assist Recreation Supervisor with pump room operation duties including but not limited to: Testing Chemicals, Backwashing and changing trap baskets.
- Assist Recreation Supervisor with maintaining the appropriate pool chemical balance.
- Enforce and uphold facility policies and procedures created in accordance with OSHA, The American Red Cross, Minnesota State Health Department and Owatonna Parks & Recreation
- All other duties that apply.
Minimum Qualifications: Must possess a valid driver's license; Current American Red Cross Lifeguard, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Certification. Must be at least 18 years of age by March 25, 2025.
Employee must be capable of operating miscellaneous office equipment, safety, janitorial and other equipment relative to this position which shall include but may not be limited to: Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Rescue Equipment, personal computer, copier, communication equipment and related items.
Preferred Qualifications: 2-3 years of lifeguarding experience. Demonstrate past experience as a lifeguard and ability to work with the public with enthusiasm, the ability to perform all necessary tasks and the ability to mentor and demonstrate leadership to other staff.
Hours of Work: This is a position with scheduled shifts including mornings, days, evening, weekends, and holidays. This position may be scheduled 6:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
Physical and Mental Demands: This position works at various facilities and locations including indoor and outdoor, with all types of weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, talk or hear, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to seventy-five (75) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
