What are the responsibilities and job description for the Full Stack Developer (Python, Django, PHP) position at City of Oxnard?
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Design, develop, and maintain web applications and APls using Python, Django, PHP, and other relevant technologies.
- Collaborate with frontend developers to implement user interfaces and ensure seamless integration between frontend and backend components.
- Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code, following best practices and coding standards.
- Perform unit testing, integration testing, and code reviews to ensure software quality and maintainability.
- Optimize application performance and scalability, identifying and addressing bottlenecks and performance issues.
- Implement security best practices to protect against common web application vulnerabilities, such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), and cross-site request forgery (CSRF).
- Integrate third-party services and APls to enhance application functionality and user experience.
- Troubleshoot and debug issues reported by users, providing timely resolutions and maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
- Stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in web development technologies, sharing knowledge and insights with the team.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes and practices, suggesting and implementing improvements to streamline workflows and increase productivity.
WORK SCHEDULE:
The normal work week is Monday through Thursday 8:00am to 6:00pm and alternating Fridays 8:00am to 5:00pm.
Please note:
The Information Technology Department supports public safety personnel including the Police Department. Therefore, aspart of the selection process, applicants will be required to successfully complete a thorough background investigation,which includes a polygraph exam.
The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
EDUCATION:
- A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution with major coursework in Computer Science, InformationTechnology, Cyber Security or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience working as a Full Stack Developer, with expertise in Python, Django, and PHP.
- Proficiency in backend development using Python and Django, with experience in building RESTful APls and web services.
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) principles and design patterns.
- Proficiency in PHP development, including experience with PHP frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony.
- Familiarity with database systems such as MS SQL Server, MySQL, etc., including database design and optimization.
- Experience in unit testing
- Excellent documentation skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex technical issues and propose effective solutions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
- Valid CA Class C Driver's License
Must be able to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing
Highly Desirable Experience, Qualifications and/or Certifications:
- Local government or public sector experience especially public safety (police and fire).
- Experience with frontend technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern JavaScript frameworks/libraries (e.g., React, Vue.js).
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative development workflows (e.g., GitFlow).

NOTE: For most positions, the City of Oxnard relies on office automation (Microsoft Office/Google) and web-based enabled tools, therefore candidates must be proficient and comfortable with computer use to perform functions associated with on-going work.
Regular and reliable attendance, effective communication skills, and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.
Employees are required to participate in the City's direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.
This position requires a 12 month probationary period.
