What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker Trainee (Division Promotional) position at City of Oxnard?
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
(Duties vary depending on assignment)
- Communicate with dispatchers concerning delays, unsafe sites, accidents, equipment breakdowns, or other maintenance problems
- Sort items set out for recycling and throw materials into designated truck compartments
- Dump refuse or recyclable materials at disposal sites
- Dismount garbage trucks to collect garbage and remount trucks to ride to the next collection point
- Refuel trucks or add other fluids, such as oil or brake fluid
- Fill out defective equipment reports
- Inspect trucks prior to beginning routes to ensure safe operating condition
- Clean trucks or compactor bodies after routes have been completed
- Tag garbage or recycling containers to inform customers of problems, such as excess garbage or inclusion of items that are not permitted
- Operate automated or semi-automated hoisting devices that raise refuse bins and dump contents into openings in truck bodies
- Make special pickups of recyclable materials, such as food scraps, used oil, discarded computers, or other electronic items
- Operate equipment that compresses collected refuse
SUPERVISION EXERCISED / SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives close supervision and specific direction regarding assignments and deadlines.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This classification is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker in that it provides semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance work.
(This class specification represents only the core areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the needs of the Department.)
Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance and operations work in support of City departments or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools, supplies and equipment for assignment; performs work following established safety policies and procedures.
Operates and maintains assigned equipment, tools and supplies; performs basic inspections to ensure safe operating conditions; cleans and performs preventative maintenance; and monitors need for replacement or advanced repair/maintenance work.
Plans, monitors and reviews inventory and supply needs; places orders or requests based on requirements.
Maintains activity logs, records, work orders and related reports.
Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.
POSITION SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES MIGHT INCLUDE:
Positions assigned to container maintenance may be responsible for:
Repairing and refurbishing commercial and industrial waste containers owned by the City;
Operating a forklift to move containers;
Assessing container damage for salvage purposes.
The following are the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:
EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
- Two (2) years of maintenance experience related to assignment
LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be a City of Oxnard employee in the Environmental Resources Division
- Must be able to communicate in English effectively, both orally and in writing
