Under direction, leads, oversees, reviews and performs the full range of law enforcement activities and duties; functions as a Beat Coordinator; assumes responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks; performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Police Corporal is the journey level class responsible for coordination of activities between Police Officers and Neighborhood Watch groups. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Police Officer I/II by the performance of the coordination and oversight responsibilities for a designated beat.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
Direction is provided by a Police Sergeant. Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level Police Officers in the absence of a Police Sergeant.

Include but are not limited to the following:
- Leads, oversees, reviews and performs the work of staff responsible for day-to-day operations of police work in an assigned beat.
- Coordinates police response to community problems.
- Works with businesses and individuals in an assigned beat to address areas of problem and concern.
- May be assigned to a special unit such as major crimes, narcotics, gangs, internal training or traffic.
- Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves service complaints.
- Evaluates assigned work projects.
- Estimates time, materials and equipment necessary for the successful completion of the project; acquires necessary resources as is appropriate.
The following are minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the classification:

- Possess the equivalent of four (4) years experience as a Police Officer, including one (1) year with Oxnard Police Department.
- 60 college units. (Must be attached to your application)
- An Associate of Arts/Science degree is highly desirable.
License, Certification and Other Requirements:
- Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver's license.
- Possession of an Intermediate Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). (Must be attached to your application)
- Current City of Oxnard Police Department Employee
- Must have an overall “Successful Performance” rating on all performance evaluations for the past two (2) years.
- No disciplinary action greater than a LOR in the past two (2) years.
The selected candidate must pass a thorough background investigation.

City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency, which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.
This position requires a twelve (12) month probationary period.
