JOB SUMMARY
Supervise all uniformed personnel assigned to their respective shift. When the sergeant is the ranking officer on duty they direct all patrol, detective, and communications personnel on duty. Responsible for delegating work assignments and monitoring performance expectation levels of subordinates on their shift. Responsible for contacting support and command personnel (i.e. investigators, administration, etc.) when needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Manages staff, prepares work schedules and assigns specific duties.
- Prepares and conducts evaluations of subordinate’s job performance.
- Assists or personally responds to requests for police service.
- Prepares or reviews the reports generated by major crimes, arrests, or incidents occurring on their assigned tour of duty to ensure that reports are submitted in an accurate, complete, and timely manner by subordinates.
- Prepares and submits on a timely basis shift activity reports, time sheets, and any other supervisory documents.
- Conducts inspections of departmental vehicles and equipment used by subordinates.
- Serves as a certified Patrol Officer and provides those duties described in the patrol job description as needed.
- Analyzes operations to evaluate performance of staff members in meeting objectives, and to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change.
- Provides current and prospective employees with information about policies, job duties, working conditions, wages, and opportunities for promotion and employee benefits.
- Conducts or arranges for ongoing relevant training and personal development classes for staff members.
- Meets with department heads, managers, supervisors, vendors, and others, to solicit cooperation and resolve problems.
- Prepares operational and risk reports for management analysis.
- Serves as a link between management and employees by handling questions and helping resolve work-related problems.
- Plans, organizes, and manages the work of subordinate staff to ensure that the work is accomplished in a manner consistent with organizational requirements.
- Collaborates with other managers and staff members to formulate and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED; and
- Five (5) years working full time in the position of police officer; minimum of three (3) years full time experience working as a police officer with the Page Police Department preferred.
- Training in various methods and functions of law enforcement, investigation, and interviewing techniques required
- Training and education through advanced levels or equivalent in police science or criminal justice is highly desired.
Licenses or Certifications:
- AZPOST Police Officer Certification.
Special Requirements:
- Must maintain a valid State driver’s license.
- Must maintain a personal cell phone.
- Required to work rotating shifts including days, swings, midnights, holidays, and any special shift required.
- May be required to change days off for special events or court appearances.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of law enforcement investigative techniques, procedures, and equipment.
- Knowledge of traffic, criminal and other codes related to law enforcement.
- Knowledge of rules of evidence, search, seizure, and court procedure is essential. In addition to standard office safety practices, must know how to strictly adhere to Department procedures.
- Knowledge of office equipment.
- Skill in using investigations and evidence gathering tools. Computer, word processing and database software programs, copiers, and adding machines. Passenger vehicles, pickup trucks, and four-wheel drive vehicles under normal and emergency driving conditions.
- Ability to be proficient in verbal and written communication skills required in English and knowledge of report writing and proficient in the use of Spillman RMS.
- Ability to conduct interviews with uncooperative, resistive, hostile emotional or traumatized children and adults.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relations with other departments, city personnel, citizens, businesses, and other law enforcement agencies.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instruction/orders.
- Ability to assign, instruct, review, and supervise the work of patrol officers and others.
- Ability to identify serious incidents that would require timely notification of the chain of command.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to meet minimum physical and medical standards as set forth by AZPOST.

The work requires decision making that could lead to major community or organizational consequences if this position fails to make the appropriate decision(s) at the time. Required to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
