CLASSIFICATION DISTINCTIONS
This is a basic level of work in GIS. Incumbents work with supervision readily available on tasks of a recurring nature. The classification is considered as basic level in a job family (GIS Technician I, II, and III).
Incumbents are expected to learn and accomplish tasks of increasing complexity as they progress to the next level. Knowledge of GIS principles is essential to the work. Assignments within the classification may involve specialization in one area or another, such as responsibility for the maintenance of a specific layer data, or skill set development.
The GIS Technician I is distinguished from the second level in the complexity and variety of tasks. This level is focused on the maintenance, entry, and analysis of spatial data. It also requires that the incumbent learn how to better utilize available GIS tools/technology for the production of mapping products.
Achievement of the second level will be appropriate when the employee is able to independently produce high-quality complex mapping products with minimal errors; provide complex technical how-to support and training/presentations; create and maintain spatial data; complex modeling and scripting; and can maintain a high standard of work produced.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES
Research and accomplish development transactions entering utility change information into the system; investigate utility history, interpret as-built descriptions; using the database, calculate customer baseline (i.e. current customers and potential customers).
Digitize/import mapping information in order to update and maintain mapping layers; verify data for accuracy; learn the implications of adjustments to the various layers given as-built descriptions.
Assist fellow colleagues, internal divisions, and other city departments with requests for maps and information regarding GIS.
Review proposed as-built and subdivisions; collect needed data to plan for future growth.
Following routine procedures generate and print maps according to specifications; train in the methods of writing programs and developing models for the production of more complex products.

Dental Insurance: Dental coverage is offered in three plans that include DHMO & PPO High/Low plans.
Vision Insurance: Vision coverage includes an annual eye exam, frames and lenses or contact lenses in lieu of eyeglasses.
Life Insurance: The City of Palm Bay provides each employee with life insurance in the amount of one time their annual base salary at no cost. Additional coverage is available at the employee's cost up to the Guaranteed Issue amount of $250,000.
Dependent/Spouse Life Insurance: The City of Palm Bay provides each employee with dependent/spouse life insurance in the amount of $5,000 per dependent at no cost. Additional coverage is available at the employee's cost.
Short Term Disability: Coverage pays 66 2/3% of employee's annual base salary during a short-term disability period not to exceed 26 weeks.
Long Term Disability: Coverage pays 66 2/3% of employee's salary at time of disability after a 180 consecutive day waiting period.
Defined Contribution Retirement Plan: City contributes a base of 3%. Employees may contribute up to 6% and the City will match the employees contribution.
Holidays: 10 holidays, 1 birthday holiday and 1 anniversary holiday.
Paid Leave: Accrue 96 hours of vacation per year, accrued hours increase after 10 years of service based on years of service. Accrue 96 hours of sick leave per year.
Tuition Reimbursement: Upon completion of the initial probationary period, employees are eligible for tuition and book reimbursement for college level courses for Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. (Currently frozen due to budget)
