Possession of ASE Heating and Air Conditioning certificate or ability to obtain within six-months from date of hire. Must be certified in recycling/reclaiming Freon usage or ability to obtain within six-months from date of hire. Must possess the hand tools required by the department.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of diversified automotive and construction equipment. Work involves removing and replacing worn or broken parts and replacing fluids; diagnosing malfunctions in automotive equipment; and maintaining records of work performed. Employee must exercise independent judgment and initiative in diagnosing problems with automotive equipment and completing indicated repair work.
Employee must furnish full complement of hand tools for performance of job functions.* Reports to the Fleet Services Supervisor.
- Under the current CBA, Light Equipment Technicians receive an annual tool allowance to purchase, replace, and update their hand tools.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES
Performs preventive maintenance on departmental light vehicles and light equipment.
Completes computerized work orders and submits these to supervisors upon completion of each repair.
Adjusts and makes repairs to gasoline- and diesel-powered engines; adjusts or repairs valves, carburetors, generators and related units; rebuilds or replaces all worn or defective parts.
Repairs and adjusts hydraulic and vacuum operated systems; replaces hydraulic motors, hoses and fittings; installs and adjusts power take offs.
Tunes engines by adjusting or replacing needed parts; makes repairs to clutches, transmissions, differentials, brakes, steering mechanisms and related units, machines drums and rotors.
Replaces tie rods, springs, and shock absorbers; replaces alternators, regulators, starters, wiring, gauges; rebuilds or adjusts components as required.
Performs major and minor mechanical repairs and adjustments on drive train, brake, steering, electrical, fuel, cooling, and related systems on light and heavy motorized equipment and vehicles; rebuilds and installs engines.
Removes and replaces damaged or worn tires, repairs inner tubes, and mounts and balances tires.
Performs routine maintenance and servicing on a variety of vehicles; changes fan belts; replaces or charges batteries; replaces spark plugs; changes oil; and replaces or cleans out filters.
Maintains records of service and repair work performed on vehicles.
Performs repairs and adjustment and/or charging of automotive air conditioning and heating systems.
Performs limited amounts of painting body and trim work.
Reclaims and recycles air conditioner refrigerant.
Performs vehicle test drives to aid diagnosis and to check repairs performed.
Performs emergency vehicle/equipment repair on an on-call basis.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
May make emergency road calls to perform minor repairs on vehicles or equipment.
Performs routine housekeeping and grounds maintenance work at City garage.
Performs other work as required.

Life Insurance: The City of Palm Bay provides each employee with life insurance in the amount of one time their annual base salary at no cost. Additional coverage is available at the employee's cost up to the Guaranteed Issue amount of $250,000.
Dependent/Spouse Life Insurance: The City of Palm Bay provides each employee with dependent/spouse life insurance in the amount of $5,000 per dependent at no cost. Additional coverage is available at the employee's cost.
Short Term Disability: Coverage pays 66 2/3% of employee's annual base salary during a short-term disability period not to exceed 26 weeks.
Long Term Disability: Coverage pays 66 2/3% of employee's salary at time of disability after a 180 consecutive day waiting period.
Defined Contribution Retirement Plan: City contributes a base of 3%. Employees may contribute up to 6% and the City will match the employees contribution.
Holidays: 10 holidays,1 birthday holiday and 1 anniversary holiday.
Paid Leave: Accrue 96 hours of vacation per year, accrued hours increase after 5 years of service based on years of service. Accrue 96 hours of sick leave per year.
Tuition Reimbursement: Upon completion of the initial probationary period, employees are eligible for tuition and book reimbursement for college level courses for Associate's, Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. (Currently frozen due to budget)
