Graduation from high school. Some work experience involving operation of mechanical or electrical equipment preferred. Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License and have and maintain an acceptable, safe driving record.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must obtain level C certification as a water or wastewater treatment plant operator from the State of Florida Department of Environmental Regulations within 24 months of assignment to the position. The trainee must apply for the first available examination in which they meet the time in grade, as required by the Department of Environmental Regulations. The trainee will be afforded the opportunity to take the examination twice. The 24-month requirement will be extended, if necessary, to allow the trainee two (2) opportunities to sit for the examination.
Code 1: Essential Employees may be required to work during an undeclared emergency and/or declared emergency. On an incident by incident basis, the employee’s Department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.
Under close supervision, performs technical work in the operation of the water purification or wastewater treatment plant, ensuring that it operates within applicable regulations. Work involves performing, or assisting in performing, preventive maintenance and repair of water purification or wastewater treatment equipment. Work also involves reading various gauges and meters, collecting lab samples, and performing, or assisting in performing, required analysis and tests, which are recorded on charts and graphs, and learning how to inspect the plant for efficient operation of equipment. Works with certified operators in making decisions and coordinating the proper operation of equipment. Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in frequent contact with plant personnel, and is responsible for performing general maintenance tasks including general cleaning of the plant and maintaining the immediate grounds. Reports to the Chief Operator of either the water purification plant or wastewater treatment plant, as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Trains in the monitoring and maintenance of the proper surveillance of all water purification and wastewater plant processes, equipment and controls to ensure efficient operation of the plant and compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, ordinances and regulations.
Maintains and performs minor repair work on pumps and other equipment as necessary; ensures proper positioning of controls and the proper operation of equipment; maintains inspection, activity and equipment records.
Collects water or wastewater samples at various stages of the treatment process and delivers to the laboratory.
Trains in learning to adjust equipment to regulate flow rates or modify treatment process in accordance with need determined by observations and tests.
Assists in or performs preventive maintenance and minor repair of plant equipment, including the lubrication of motors and pumps.
Advises supervisor of general plant operations and any non-compliance situations.
Assists in or performs preventative maintenance and minor repair of plant equipment, including the lubrication of motors and pumps.
Maintains general cleanliness of the plant and performs various grounds keeping tasks such as mowing grass, weeding, and edging.
May be assigned to shift work. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be assigned to either the water or wastewater plant. May be required to respond to after hour call.
