The employee occupying this position is responsible for the cataloging and processing of library materials (60%), and general circulation activities (40%) and reference activities. The Library Specialist is expected to assist in the normal day-to-day activities of the library. Tasks will vary; however, each task is of a highly routine nature and performed according to readily available standards and guidelines. Tasks performed outside the normal routine are received orally or in writing. Work is performed with some independence within prescribed guidelines standards, and procedures. Work hours may include weekends and evenings. The Library Specialist will be the lead employee for the front desk operations. Tasks will vary; however, each task is of a highly routine nature and performed according to readily available standards and guidelines. Tasks performed outside the normal routine are received orally or in writing. Work is performed with some independence within prescribed guidelines standards, and procedures. Work hours may include weekends and evenings.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Provide customer service at the circulation desk by providing reference and reader’s advisory services, and performing all functions related to the circulation of library material according to established policies and procedures.Perform copy cataloging for newly acquired library materials in all formats using various sources for catalog records.Registers patrons and maintains circulation and patron records using the Integrated Library System (ILS) while maintaining confidentiality of patron records.Collect fines and fees, which can involve responding to complaints about fines.Assist patrons in selecting and locating library materials.Produce overdue notices, and other basic reports under the direction of the Library Assistant, Library Director. Assess damaged library materials, billing accounts as necessary according to established fee schedule.Charge and discharge library materials using SirsiDynix Symphony WorkFlows.Use Ryan Dowd training techniques to handle disruptions in the library. Take appropriate actions to halt commotion of library activities by disruptive patrons. May perform clerical functions such as filing, typing, copying, sorting, and record keeping related to library operations. Cultivate and maintain a climate, which is free of harassment, intimidation, and disrespect to provide a safe place to work and a safe, professional environment for customers. Assists patrons with library computers, copiers, printers, video conference equipment and other library equipment, which can involve basic troubleshooting and maintenance. May perform clerical functions such as filing, typing, copying, sorting, and record keeping related to library operations. Provide digital literacy training to patrons using personal electronic devices or library equipment. This type of assistance can include but is not limited to explaining what e-mail is, creating an e-mail account, accessing an email account, basic troubleshooting of a personal electronic device, accessing and completing the PFD application, job applications, locating tax forms, locating legal documents, scanning documents, attaching files to an e-mail, downloading a document, and printing.Assumes responsibility for the operation of the library in the absence of Library Assistant, Library Services Coordinator or Library Director. May be left in charge of the library for up to eight hours.Other related duties as assigned.
