Description

A Police Impound Lot Technician involves working in a vehicle impound lot, handling tasks related to the storage, maintenance, and processing of impounded vehicles/equipment, to include cars, trucks, ATV’s, golf carts, other mechanical equipment. This could include receiving and storing vehicles/equipment, maintaining lot security, performing basic vehicle/equipment maintenance for cleaning or ensuring operability, assisting with vehicle/property auctions or release procedures, and potentially dealing with administrative tasks like record-keeping or data entry.

MAJOR DUTIES


  • Receiving and Storing Vehicles and Equipment:
Handling stored vehicles/equipment, ensuring proper documentation, and safely storing them in the lot. This may involve using specialized equipment for moving vehicles/equipment and securing them in designated areas. Operating vehicles within the impound lot and potentially assisting with towing or vehicle transport.
  • Lot Maintenance and Security:
Maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the impound lot, ensuring security measures are in place, and potentially patrolling the lot to prevent vandalism or theft.
  • Basic Vehicle/Equipment Maintenance:
Performing minor repairs or maintenance tasks on vehicles/equipment to ensure they are safe and operable, such as cleaning, checking fluids, or addressing minor mechanical issues.
  • Vehicle Release and Auction Assistance:
Assisting with the process of releasing vehicles/property to their owners and potentially assisting with vehicle/property auctions or disposal procedures.
  • Administrative Support:
Performing data entry, record-keeping, preparing reports, and managing vehicle/equipment inventory.
  • Communication and Customer Service:
Interacting with internal/external city personnel/persons, tow truck drivers, and other personnel involved in the impound process, providing information, and ensuring a smooth and professional experience.
  • Policy:
Interpreting and adhering to all applicable Federal and State safety laws, rules and regulations, City policies and procedures, and Department policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Relevant experience to demonstrate diverse objectives and the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Successfully pass background check and NCIC/FCIC certification.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of basic vehicle/equipment maintenance and operation.
  • Skill in the safe and lawful operation of motor vehicles.
  • Skill in accurately entering and maintaining data.
  • Skill in using standard office equipment, computer equipment and software.
  • Skill in providing quality customer service.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain appropriate keyboard skills necessary for successful performance.
  • Ability to accurately input data, maintain records, and potentially use computer systems to track vehicles/equipment.
  • Ability to maintain accurate vehicle/equipment documentation, proper storage, and adherence to procedures.
  • Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences.
  • An ability to respond with tact, composure, and courtesy even when encountering contentious circumstances and assisting individuals who may be experiencing significant stress.
  • The ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including vehicle owners, tow truck drivers, and other personnel.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
  • The Police Captain assigns work in terms of general instructions, department goals, and objectives. The supervisor will review the work to check for compliance with policy, procedures, and accuracy.

TYPICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Physical labor:

While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, see, reach, kneel, crouch, twist, grasp, and perform frequent light to moderate lifting up to 50 lbs. and occasional heavy lifting over 50lbs. while moving and securing vehicles, potentially requiring physical strength and stamina.

  • Outdoor environment:

Working in an open-air impound lot, exposed to weather conditions (sun, rain, heat, and cold).

  • Potential hazards:

Exposure to dust, noise, fumes, grease, and potentially hazardous materials associated with vehicles/equipment.

  • Shift work:
Impound lots often operate 24/7, requiring flexibility to work various shifts and potentially overtime.
