MAJOR DUTIES
- Manages the inspection, maintenance, and repair of wastewater lift stations and emergency support equipment to prevent sanitary sewer overflow and to maintain proper efficiencies and reliability. Schedules inspection and testing for all lift stations and maintains records of this work.
- Monitors SCADA telemetry system.
- Supervises and directs the activities of assigned staff; makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, termination or advancement of employees. Schedules employees, assigns work, and monitors progress; guides, trains, and develops employees in the accomplishment of their duties and professional growth; evaluates performance.
- Maintains work order tracking system.
- Enters data related to lift station operations.
- Plans and organizes bypass pumping projects.
- Supervises the maintenance of appropriate inventory of parts and supplies needed to timely maintain and repair the equipment and facilities.
- Reviews and approves employee payroll records.
- Manages employee on-call schedules. Coordinates and manages emergency responses to critical situations.
- Manages the location and acquisition of parts and equipment.
- Presents information and responds to questions and concerns from upper management, team members, vendors, and the public.
- Organizes and directs all emergency preparation, operation, and demobilization efforts related to lift station operations.
- Coordinates the calibration of equipment.
- Ensures compliance with applicable city, state, and federal safety policies and regulations.
- Remains informed of current developments in the field.
- Participates in the preparation and administration of assigned unit budget, submits budget recommendations, and monitors expenditures.
- Performs related duties.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.

Five years of progressively responsible related experience, particularly in lift stations.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
Knowledge of wastewater collection system operation and maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of lift station inspection, repair, and maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of the hazards inherent to sewer maintenance work and the safety measures used to mitigate those hazards.
- Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations.
- Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the maintenance of lift station equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Utilities Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include safety codes, relevant government regulations, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
The work consists of varied supervisory and technical duties. The number of lift stations to be managed contributes to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the repair and maintenance of wastewater lift stations. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of department operations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the essential duties of this job, the employee is required to talk, hear, see, stand, walk, reach, kneel, twist, finger, grasp, bend, crouch, stoop, and perform repetitive motions. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold, extreme heat, or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and dangerous gases. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over Lift Station Supervisor and Lift Station Mechanic.
PTO Leave: Leave begins accruing immediately. The schedule varies slighter for Fire Fighters.

less than 5 years: 152 hours
5 to 9 years: 176 hours
10 to 14 years: 200 hours
15 to 19 years: 224 hours
20 years: 248 hours
PTO begins accruing immediately. At the end of the year, any unused annual leave will roll over to the next year. Time will be accrued bi-weekly and shown on each paycheck.
RETIREMENT: General employees are fully vested after 10 years of employment. Employees can become partially vested at five (5) years of service. Partial vesting at five (5) years is 50%, six (6) years 60%, seven (7) years 70%, eight (8) years 80%, and nine (9) years 90%. General Employees are eligible for normal retirement upon the earlier of reaching age 55 and the completion of 10 years of credited service or reaching age 50 and the completion of 20 years of credited service. The amount of normal retirement benefit is based on your credited service and average final compensation. See General Employees’ Pension Plan Summary for more details.
