What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wastewater Facility Maintenance Mechanic Trainee position at City of Panama City Beach?
This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the wastewater treatment plant and related facilities. An incumbent in this position may be designed “Mechanic I,”, “Mechanic II,” “Mechanic III,” or “Mechanic Trainee.”
- Participates the responsive repair and maintenance of a variety of treatment plant equipment, including mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems.
- Oversees special projects as assigned, including system upgrades and major repairs.
- Researches, designs, and fabricates parts.
- Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment; makes purchases as needed.
- Performs schedules preventive maintenance of treatment plant equipment.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call.
- Performs related duties.
- Ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Trainee – Must have graduated from standard high school or have GED equivalency certificate.
- Mechanic I – Must have graduated from standard high school, or have GED equivalency certificate; one (1) years of experience with the wastewater maintenance division; must possess a Class “C” Wastewater Collection Technician Certification issued by FW&PCOA.
- Mechanic II – Must have graduated from standard high school, or have GED equivalency certificate; three (3) years of experience with the wastewater maintenance division; must possess a Class “B” Wastewater Collection Technician Certification issued by FW&PCOA
- Mechanic III - Must have graduated from standard high school, or have GED equivalency certificate; five (5) years of experience with the wastewater maintenance division; must possess a Class “A” Wastewater Collection Technician Certification issued by FW&PCOA
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of state and federal environmental regulations related to wastewater treatment.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant equipment operations and maintenance principles.
- Knowledge of the safe operation of industrial tools and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of carpentry and plumbing principles.
- Knowledge of inventory management principles.
- Skill in the design and fabrication of parts and equipment.
- Skill in prioritizing and planning.
- Skill in the analysis of data and the preparation of reports.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Wastewater Facility Maintenance Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include OSHA, DEP, and EPA regulations and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.

- The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant Successful performance results in the safe and regulatory compliant treatment of wastewater.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is typically performed in an office, a treatment plant, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, noxious wildlife, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of personal protective equipment.
