Major Functions
Work is performed under the guidance and leadership of the Director of Public Works. This is semi-skilled work in assisting the mechanic in repairing and rebuilding vehicles and heavy equipment and servicing public works and other City equipment and vehicles.
This position is designated as an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).

- Provides mechanical services on cars, trucks and various types of equipment.
- Conducts oil changes, change belts, brakes, various service and transmissions repairs.
- Changes tires and repairs various types of tires.
- Performs body work on various vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnosis various mechanical issues and analyze issues with vehicles.
- Change fluid and refill fluids.
- Change belts and other general maintenance items.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
- Assists other mechanics on more complex repairs and analysis of issues.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of the function and parts of automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of the types, grades and uses of automotive lubricants including ability to work from lubrication charts.
- Ability to drive various types of equipment.
- Ability to utilize power tools including impact and compressor-based tools.
- Strong skills in the use of mechanical tools.
- Ability to measure and read/interpret measurements.
- Understanding of the difference between metric and standard measurements.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to work from lubrication charts.
- Strong skills in operating safely in a mechanical environment.
- Strong housekeeping skills as it relates to a traditional shop environment.
- Ability to repair tires and tubes.
- Ability and desire to learn new skills independently.
- Strong reading skills to research resolutions to problems.
- Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform automotive servicing.
- Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
- Valid Driver's License.
- One (1) year of experience in servicing automotive equipment and performing mechanical work preferred.
