POSITION SUMMARY
Under supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor in the construction and maintenance of streets, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water mains and related facilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in construction and maintenance work such as forming, paving and finishing concrete; cut and break up concrete and asphalt pavement
- Use hand tools, shovels, jackhammer, mower, weed eater, compactor and tamper
- Patch and paint streets
- Construct and repair sidewalks, curbs and gutters
- Install and repair street signs
- Assist in repairing and installing sewer and water infrastructure
- Assist in cleaning sanitary and storm sewers
- Operate trucks and light motorized equipment
- Perform mowing, weed trimming, tree trimming & other lawn maintenance.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
- Occasionally operate heavier types of motorized equipment including a motor grader and loader on a training basis
- Maintains regular, reliable and punctual attendance
- Assist other departments as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Public Works Director
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Experience: Minimum one (1) year experience as an entry level laborer.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED equivalent required.
License/Certification: Valid Kansas Class B commercial driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to understand and follow written and oral directions and safety practices; ability to operate a variety of construction and maintenance equipment; ability to operate hand power equipment; ability to complete simple reports.
Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position. Directs problems to Superintendent, Assistant Director or Director of Public Works
Decision Making: Limited decision making exists in this position. Decisions regarding assigned job are directed to supervisor.
Supervision: A high level of supervision is provided in this position.
Financial Accountability: The employee has limited responsibility for departmental resources and does not participate in the annual budget process; however, employee will be required to complete and turn in purchase orders for department expenses.
Personal Relations: Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public. Employee must take pride in the City’s ethical standards and have respect for other employees and the general public.
Working Conditions: This position requires the willingness and ability to work around raw sewage, chemicals and dusty environments, exposure to noise of plant machinery and other equipment; mechanical and electrical hazards of operating equipment; fumes and odors of sewage, chemicals, and gases; toxic substances such as chemicals, cleaners, solvents, and gases; all types of weather and temperature conditions. May be required to work in confined spaces, hazardous traffic conditions, or high/dangerous places, work and/or walk for long periods of time on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain. Subject to 24-hour emergency callbacks and standby and requires working varying hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays. Work environment is informal, team-oriented, having both routine and variable tasks with variable pace and pressure. Work is performed in both indoors in plant area and outdoors in field and collateral facilities.
Physical Requirements: Must have the ability to perform heavy physical work and be able to lift and carry up to 75 pounds occasionally. Must be able to stand, walk, climb on equipment, bend, twist, kneel and perform similar body movements. Hand/eye/foot coordination adequate to operate equipment, using tools, and/or making repairs. Ability to speak clearly and hear in person, phone or other communication devices. Ability to hear equipment as a means of diagnosing malfunctions. Ability to see and read adequately for operation, maintenance and repair of equipment and facilities, reading manuals and charts, logging and maintaining operational and treatment records, reading and preparation of documents.
