The City of Pasadena's Library and Information Services Department has an excellent career opportunity for a library paraprofessional to work as a Library Technician in a full-time capacity. The Library Technician will have an extensive working knowledge of library support operations, exhibit excellent customer service abilities, and possess the technical knowledge and maturity level to serve in a lead support role to lower-level staff. The successful candidate will have familiarity of Pasadena's Library programs and services, be enthusiastic about the library's goals and objectives and participate in programs and outreach activities to connect with and support the Pasadena community.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service background with experience planning and implementing programs, outreach and related events, preferably in the public sector such as public libraries, parks and recreation, public schools, and camps. This person will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, employ resourceful thinking, the ability to take initiative, stay organized, oversee the work of support staff, and demonstrate a strong work ethic.

  • Provides excellent customer service in each interaction with patrons in person, over the phone, or through virtual media in order to answer questions, locate information and educate the public in a variety uses of library resources.
  • Leads as well as assists Librarians with various programs including library visits, weekly storytimes, book discussion groups, outreach events, school visits, and local history projects, creates and assembles materials for programming and prepares and sets up equipment for library events.
  • Represents the library in meetings with other public agencies, community groups and the public and speaks before groups about library programs and services; may act as liaison with various organizations and vendors.
  • In a lead capacity, provides work guidance and direction and participates in the work of other library staff; assigns and monitors the work of other employees for completeness and accuracy; provides input to supervisor on employee work performance and behaviors.
  • Performs a variety of routine and complex circulation-related tasks; answers/researches reference inquiries; interprets and explains library policies and procedures to patrons; collects payment for services or fees and resolves patron account issues.
  • Maintains facility staffing and programming schedules; secures appropriate resources as needed; may be responsible for creating, maintaining, and monitoring hourly, daily, weekly and monthly staff schedules.
  • Contributes to collection development by using library software to weed and manage library materials.
  • Following established procedures, promptly reports facility maintenance needs, library equipment issues and security concerns; troubleshoots problems with patrons.
  • Provides technical support to patrons and staff in the uses and operations of library equipment and software including, but not limited to, computers, printers, scanners, copiers, microfilm and databases.
  • May be responsible for opening and closing a library facility and for securing the facility, its contents and premises.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends in library science and information technology through various forms of training, reviewing professional literature and participating in professional organizations.
  • Compiles data and information and develops library activity reports and statistics regarding circulation and reference services.
  • Tracks, monitors and orders supplies for a library branch or division.
  • Acts as the person in charge in the absence of a Librarian.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an Associate of Arts degree and
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in performing paraprofessional duties in a public library; or two years of experience in the City of Pasadena Public Library in the class of Library Assistant.
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in library sciences, liberal arts, social sciences, education or a related field is preferred.

SELECTION PROCESS

There is currently one full-time vacancy in the Public Services Division of the Libraries & Information Services Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.

The employee may be required to work evenings and weekends.
